Red face Lost key --where's the code??

I have a 1981 Yamaha 850 Special that I listed for sale on Craigslist -- and then discovered that i don't have a key for it! It's 'misplaced.' Does anyone, anywhere know how to locate this mysterious "key code" I keep hearing about? It's not on the silver thing that the key would slide into... and i don't have the owner's manual. No one can make me a key from the VIN on the title. I am desperate... I've gotten scores of emails from guys wanting to see the bike (which hasn't even been started in 5 years --- long story). Please help an old lady biker. my email address is snazzytoes88@yahoo.com

If a Yamaha dealer can't help you get the code from the factory using the VIN OFF THE BIKE, which might be slightly different than what's on the title...........then you're gonna have to find a good locksmith.......or sell it as it sits, for almost nothing.

The services of a locksmith might not be as expensive as you think.

Default Re: lost key...

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that the VIN on the title could be different than the one on the bike. In fact, I've never even seen the VIN on the bike! I hate to sound so stupid, but where might I find the VIN?

Only place I've ever seen one is stamped into the steering head.
Maybe somebody else can add to that.

I think the engine also has a serial number (engine vin) which I've heard also sometimes makes it's way on to titles by "mistake".

I still think a locksmith is your best bet (and quickest).
