Default Slip on mufflers

I have to replace the mufflers on my newly aquired 77 Yamaha 360.
What is the difference (besides price) between the slip on vs. oem. ?.

My first guess would be availability. If you can get it, I would go with stock if the bike is in good condition. aftermarket if you want more noise and/or carb jetting changes.

Thanks for the reply. The OEM are more expensive, I'll go that way and stay away from any more tuning, tweaking and mumbling @#&^%(*+)$!..

How much more ? Is the bike in good shape ? An aftermarket pipe doesn't mean you have to re-jet.

If it's in nice shape, it's cool to see those old girls in factory trim.

Default Slip ons

Thanks for the replies Palanon. Yes. that is the picture of the old girl. Mine is almost that nice. Paint is nice except for fading on the front fender and behind the tail light. A few scratches in the left side cover, a couple rock dings on the front fender as well. Chrome on rims is nice but the spokes are a bit fuzzy. This 2D model has kick start only, front and rear drum brakes. I got my OJT on kick starting after I fueled and oiled it.
I'm confused as to what "Slip On" muffler means.
On another forum a guy was advised to get rid of his "Scorpion" slip ons because they change the back pressure and requires "re mapping" ???.
This is my first bike so I sure appreciate your comments and suggestions for an old guy with one brain cell left.

Those aren't chips, dings and faded paint...it's character. Replacement mufflers for those old bikes aren't really " slip ons " , some are larger with less baffling and do reduce back pressure somewhat. Re-mapping refers to changing the programing on fuel injected bikes. With that old girl, the most you would need to do would be a re jet and/or shim the needles.

OK, I would like to have quiet mufflers, so do you think OEM's would be best ?
I can get slip on mufflers for quite a bit less than OEM's, I can call and see if the slip on's are loud or what, and if I have to re jet I guess it's no big project. How do you just "slip on" a muffler ?.

OEM, I think, is the best for you. Either muffler set up will most likely be held on with a band type clamp with a crome trim cover over that.

Well, OEM mufflers are apparently not to be had. Every outfit I contacted that listed them would reply "No longer available". I got some aftermarket's, same shape and size from Dennis Kirk. A bit more noise than I wanted but still OK. Overall, it looks better and sounds better.
