Default stalled

Just took the 500 (new with just over a 100 miles on it) out for a short spin, maybe five or so miles. It is warm here 70+, I let the bike warm up about 2/3 minutes at half choke then took off. After about three miles I came to a left turn and had to stop to let traffic pass before the turn and as I sat there it stalled, this happened a few nights ago and again I was not far from home. I have read it might be a good idea to leave it at half choke then after a few miles push the choke in. Is it a good idea, and because I didn't do that, could that be why the bike stalled?

Maybe so. Then again maybe the idle speed is just too low.
I've always had to tweek mine up a bit after it's been in the shop, regardless of what bike it is.

My wife's 500 does not seem too cold blooded - like my S50 which needs choke even if it's 90 degrees!
One thing we did discover is that you have to be careful turning the ignition key to not turn it past the "on" position. If you do the bike will not start!
We spent 5 frustrating minutes trying to figure out why the bike wouldn't start on our ride today - and figured out finally that my wife had turned it past "on" to halfway between "on" and "P".

It was cranking and cranking but would not fire up.

One of the instructors in BRC said that if you forget to turn off the choke the rich mixer could foul up the plugs. He suggested traveling with spare plugs in case this happened. If all else fails it might be worth checking out the condition of the spark plugs.

That would be true IF you have a bike with a "real" choke. Most modern designs (last 10 years for the majors ???) don't really have a choke; the carb'ed models have an "enricher" mechanism that only comes into play at or near idle. FI models are a whole different story but the "choke" enrichment also only applies at idle (electronically).

With that in mind, you should be able to leave the "choke" on for a couple of miles with no ill effects at all...........assuming that everything is working as it should.

Easy Rider,

Thanks for the info. It's been a lot of years since I did any real tinkering with these things, that I didn't know how the newer carbs worked.

My bike is new too, just over 100 miles on it. The plugs wouldn't be fouled yet?
