Unhappy Rider Down...

Guys, I know that this is only my 5th or so post but, today I went for my first group ride. Something happened that has not only changed my perspective on riding but, also my perspective on life. There was around 16 of us, all riding different types of bikes. That didn't matter because we were there for one thing and that was to ride. Well one of my fellow riders, RJ, didn't make it home alive this day. He ended up in an accident right in front of a myself and a buddy of mine. We helped him out, and it seemed like that paramedics, police, EMT's volunteers came out of the woodwork to help out in whatever way they could. RJ was flown to a hospital, as he left we thought that he would be fine because "it didn't look that bad". We found out later that it was that bad, bad enough to where he lost the fight, the fight for his life. So if you would please, take a moment of silence for a fellow rider..

Ride on RJ....

The next time you get on your bike...Please be safe...

Happy and SAFE Riding.....

I'm sorry for your loss maddawg. Life is short, so live it everyday.

A lot of times after a get off, you think you're fine or it wasn't that bad. Stay still and get checked out because your mind can convince you that you are fine, when you are not.

A couple years ago after a crash my mind convinced me I was fine, until I tried to get back on my bike. I was alone and had my collar bone broken, cracked ribs, protruding shoulderblade ground away, exposed knee, knuckles and hip bones and alot of missing skin. But I thought I was OK and would just ride home! Didn't happen. Especially once the pain set in.

Years ago a friend got off, hit a gaurdrail, got up dusted off, sat down and leaned against the railing to gather his composure, and was dead in five minutes from internal injuries. He thought he was fine too!

If you don't mind my asking, what caused the accident? Did someone hit him or cut him off?

Thanks for sharing the story.

I would also ask for what happened so that someone on the board may learn from your friend's tragedy.

Sorry for the loss.

Real sorry to hear about your friend, your right it does change your perspective on riding. Unfortunetly for some people like some of my friends it doesn't take that long to start doing the crazy stuff again. Again I'm sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to all whom have lost a fellow rider/friend/or family member.

All, thanks for all of your responses. It means a lot..

It was a single bike accident. We were all slowing down for traffic and for some reason he hit his front brakes too hard, bike flipped into the air landing on him twice. I'm not sure how long he had been riding but it looked like he panicked. We had the bike checked out for possible mechanical problem but nothing was wrong with the bike.

Don't be too proud to take any type of safety course and/or practice emergency braking techniques etc..

Thanks again for all of the posts..

Happy and Safe Riding...

Wow, I'm very sorry! I hate to hear those stories, no matter what the circumstances.

It does make me want to go practice using my front brake though!!!

I think it was a Honda GX-6. I'm not sure of the model, all I know is that it was a sportbike. No payments made on it yet, that's how new it was.

Pretty much as Maddawg summed it up. Here is the article, no additional details.

Man dies in motorcycle crash

By Eric D. Williams
May 29, 2005

Mason County

A Bremerton man lost control of his motorcycle on Highway 101 near Potlatch in Mason County on Friday afternoon, and later died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. on Friday. The driver, Antwone Simmons, was headed northbound with a group of motorcycles when he attempted to stop with slowing traffic, flipping over the motorcycle and landing in the roadway. The motorcycle then landed on top of Simmons.

"We believe he was basically an inexperienced rider, riding a brand new bike," said Washington State Trooper Scott Harter. "When he slowed down for traffic, he just applied too much of the front brake and went over the handlebars."

Simmons, 24, suffered broken legs and internal injuries, and was transported to Harborview.
