Exclamation sputtering bike --need help????

Hello all !

I have 2, 2004 volusia's both bikes do this. when we ride and are crusing around 30-40 mph the engine sputters and coughs. This was first noticed when we bought the bikes, if they were not warmed up they would do that until warm. We took care of that problem and we now let them warm up. But it is now doing this hours into a ride and only around 30-40mph. Anyone have anything like this happen? Any recomendations???? will be going to dealer soon.

I'm not the wrench here, but sounds carb-ish to me. '04's should be under warranty - take 'em in.

Definately sounds like a carb adjustment is in order. VOLs run lean from the factory in order to pass the anti-smog regulations.

This is from BriMan's posting on the volusiariders site

There's several ways to tell if you're running lean:
1. Is the bike still stock other than the pipes? If so, you're running lean. The bike is lean from the crate, and pipes make it more so. They allow more air to pass through the engine, increasing the oxygen content of the fuel mixture, leaning the mix out.
2. Does the bike seem "flatter" when accelerating now?
3. Does the fan come on more often, does the engine seem hotter?
4. Put in new plugs, then check them after a day or so of riding. Are he plugs white? If so, the bike is lean.

Ways to tell you're running rich:
1. Does the bike accelerate, then suddenly "bog down"? Is acceleration smooth in some parts of the throttle, but not in others?
2. Are the plugs black or dark brown?
3. When accelerating, does black smoke come out of the pipes?
4. After really hammering the throttle, and suddenly decelerating to no throttle, does the bike sputter then die (careful, this can also mean the idle is too low).
5. Does the bike run stronger when the engine is cold, then performance drops as it warms up?

I cough and sputter occasionally, but only due to cold weather. My Vol is definitely not cold blooded. The best thing I did for it was ride on a warm day. Pulling the choke out one notch seemed to solve the problem on cold days.
