Default Rear Brake Pedal Return Spring

I'm not sure how, but somewhere along the line my rear brake pedal return spring must have become stretched. I noticed that my brake pedal didn't return on it's own once and found the spring just hanging there. I replaced it and a little bit later it came off again. I went through this process a few more times before just removing the spring. I haven't had the return spring on for several months now.

The brake still works just fine, but I have to use my foot to raise the pedal when I'm riding at low speeds. Before I go hunting for a new spring, I'd like to know what caused this. I put forward controls on a while back and then ended up reverting back to stock, but the spring didn't start falling off until several months after that. Any ideas?
