Are you gonna paint the engine components flat black or leave chrome?

I want to see your exhaust sounds like you have something definite figured out. but yet I still can't make up my mind, well that and when I don't have a ready mound of cash laying around there is really no hurry either. Good luck can't wait to see the finished product.

Default mod away my amish friend!

I am "into" your project as I have an m50 and really want to get enough motivation to do more to my bike. I already have a c50 rear fender along with a blacked out headlight bucket. I am thinking of frenching in some 59 caddy taillights somehow onto either the c50 or my stock m50 fender. What happened to the idea of skirting the front fender?
Inquiring minds want to know. Please continue to keep all of us informed of your progress.

hahaha - the skirting fenders will take more time than Im willing to have the bike down right now - hahaha. Still going forward with it tho.

I just finished painting the new rear fender gloss black last night. Ohhhhh - that is sooooo it! I am going to paint the rest of the parts - gas tank, side covers - this weekend. I am going to swap out the lower fork covers for rubber fork boots and paint the upper fork covers gloss black (along with the headlight bucket). The engine jugs will be flat black - high temp paint because high temp doesnt do gloss Leaving the engine tops and pipes chrome.
Not sure about the trees, bars, and risers yet (dont want to paint the mirrors - not sure would look good..) and not sure if the fork lowers should be painted too...

cool part is - when i finally finish the fenders - they will look good in gloss black as well...

The pipes are gonna be simple. I snagged a pair of chromed 1 1/2" aftermarket pipes (made for a honda shadow i think) - I am going to chop the headers off the stock pipes (under the heat shields). Then modify and weld a small 4" universal baffle from J&P cycles in the ends of each header. Then chop the chrome aftermarkets and weld them to the ends of the stock headers. With the baffles being so far inside the pipe, the tone will be perfect and pressure should be close enough to stock to avoid resetting the computer ( i build aftermarket sportbike mufflers, even hold a patent for my baffle designs). Simple and effective - plus all the cuts and welds will be under the heat shields so it will look good too. Thats the very simplified version of the plan...

TallAnnie gave me a kit to remove the aircleaner housing and make the bike cleaner looking by hiding the air intake - but I need a power commander for that... might just bit the bullet and do that too. As long as I'm tweaking things

argh! I'm so ticked off right now. I had the rear fender done - just waiting for clearcoat - as I was bringing the other parts in to start the prep work - I bumped the stand the fender was on - I reached to grab it before it hit the ground and wound up with a small mark on it. No big deal - I can lightly sand it and touch up that spot. MY GOD! You'd think I was painting with friggin brushes - everytime I tried to fix it - it just got worse - crackling, then spiderwebing then wrinkling! I've had it.

My new plan is to friggin rhino liner the entire thing! Then I dont have to worry about washing it, dropping it, scratching it, or anything. What was I thinking with gloss black?!

Im so friggin ticked.

ok - i've calmed down a little bit now. I am going to try one more time to clean it up and respray it this weekend. Hopefully all will go well...

I am sidetracking from the paint and body for a minute to chop the exhaust pipes.

I also need to get a nice new sanding block... mine somehow got lodged on the roof of a neighbors house last night... must be vandals...

ok - well i spent 6 hours on it last night - taking my time and making sure i did everythign right. (Just in case - I stopped at Walmart on the way home last night and bought some undercoating.. )
I stripped the rear fender back down - smoothed it up and let the filler sit overnight to dry in the shop. I prepped, primed, and painted the side covers, air cleaner cover, and gauge housing gloss black without a single issue, run, crack, or spec of overspray. I let them sit to dry. I started removing the gas tank, but I dont have the tool to remove the fuel line so I gotta find that today. Probably cost $40 or something

I started the pipe-chop. I removed the pipes from the bike, removed the mufflers from the pipes, and then chopped the connector pipe off the rear cylinder exhaust pipe and welded up the hole. I thne took the 4" mini baffles from J&P cycles (1 1/2"x 4") and added a rear half-cap to the baffle. I then welded the baffle to the end tip of the stock headers and will now line up my chrome drag pipes to get the length and tone I want and then weld the outer chrome pipe in place liek a long tailpipe for a car. The stock heat shields will be used and will make the pipes look like they were almost factory!

pics will come this weekedn as I start finishing things up...

ok - sprayed everything but the new rear fender I am trying to get it as smooth as possible, but just cant seem to get to the point where I call it smooth enough. Black is an unforgiving color - especially gloss black - so I really need the fender to be slick as glass before it gets primed. No worries tho...

I ordered the black fork boots - they are on the way. I am making some upper fork tube covers out of old chrome exhaust pipes that I will have powdercoated black to match the rest of the bike. I am seriously thinking about spraying the triple trees, handlebars, and risers, as well as the headlight bucket and fork lowers. I probably will end up doing them in gloss black as well. - just be the next stage...

Thinking I will leave the rims as is. The contrast will be a better look I think.

Going to go finish up the pipes now.

Got the pipes made today and installed. Havent fired them up yet because the bike is still half taken apart for paint andnew parts. My fork boots came in the mail today - gonna try and slap them on tomorrow in between finishing the rear fender.

That dang thing - the rear fender - I stripped it down to bare metal again this morning - what a chore! Then I have slowly built up the low spots and I'm hoping it will all worj out like it is supposed to tomorrow. hahaha.

I got the lower engine covers primed and high-temp painted today as well.

I have to make a support bracket forthe exhaust pipes - but I'll snap a pic tomorrow when the sun is back out.

I'm whooped right now - going to get a cold drink and chill out for awhile...

yeah - I read that on here somewhere - but since the right side isnt fake - I thought it looked better with both.

didnt get pictures of the powdercoated rear fender supports or sissybar, etc... so you'll just have to wait untilthe bike is assembled to get the full look. I cant wait to put the before picture and the after picture side by side - hahaha

thanks - just hope it sounds like it should...

The clearcoat on these parts makes it look amazing. 3 coats of paint and 6 coats of clear. Will be doing the finishing sanding this week...

Gonna try to get the fork boots on this week before the holdiay

Just wondering, what paint and clearcoat did you use? Just asking becaues I used some rattle can primer, and black laquer on a couple of small items it seems to be holding up fine, so far. Just wondering if I should use it on the plastic parts or not. Unfortunately I haven't found a cycle grave yard around here, so I can get some sacrifical test peices..

I want to know how your exhaust sounds. Those pipes look sweet... and way cheaper than aftermarket.

I use acrylic base coat/clearcoat from PPG. The real clearcoat holds up to road debris, scratches, gas spills, etc... Spray paint clear will not hold up to a gas drop on the tank when removing the nossle from the pump. Learned that one the hard way...

Now - at the risk of being flamed - you can use spray paint to do primer and even your base coat - as long as you use the automotive clearcoat from PPG or any other body shop acrylic clearcoat. A paintjob is all in the prep work.

Well - I just spent an hour removing the fork covers and adding black rubber fork boots. What a difference it made - was too dark to take pics, but I will as soon as I can. I should be ready to reassemble it this weekend!!! I can hardly wait to see it all together again.
