Default Final drive oil spill? Is it normal?

Hi

I am new to both this forum and to the world of the C50 boulevard. Mine is 2007 and has now 230 miles on it. however, I noticed the other day oil spilled all over the rear rim apparently from the final drive.

Has anyone had something similar? Is it normal?

thanks

Check the drain and fill plugs for tightness and make sure the factory didn't leave off the crush washers. Otherwise the seal is leaking, take a whiff of the oil, rear drive oil has a distinct oder.

definitely not normal, take it back to the dealer and have them thoroughly check the bike over, since they obviously didn't before they shipped it out the door.

Not familiar with this model, but before going to crazy, is there a way to check if the oil level is too high?

Default can't overfill

Unless they changed the design from 06, you can't overfill the rear end. The manual says to fill it up to top, but I think that is with the bike on the kickstand. Maybe filling it up with the bike upright would cause a slight overfill? I doubt it, though.

I doubt it is overfilled. I don't think it can be, like DaveMC said.

It is definitely not right. There should definitely not be any oil on the rim. This could be a big mechanical problem if you let it go and any oil near a wheel can be a potentially dangerous situation.

I would get it checked fast.

Default Oil spill

Thank you all for the tip. Will see the dealer asap and let you know what happens!

Came across this form IntruderCafe:

apparently I'm not the only one with such a problem!

A mate's C50 over here started leaking. Turned out that the nut was not seated correctly. He undid it a turn or two then did it up. There must have been something wrong with the thread as it corrected itself & tightened all the way.

Hold it off the stand in a vertical position.

Default Oil spill resolved!

Took it the dealer today and turned out it was NOT final drive oil on the wheel. Guy said it was cosmo somthing they spray bikes with and sometims they over do it at the factory!!

Cleaned the rim and wheel and took it for a 30 mile ride. Looks ok.

Cosmoline. It protects metal during shipping and keeps it from oxidizing.
They use in when shipping gun parts new from the factory.

If it's cosmoline, it will be a sticky, jelly like substance.

I would keep an eye on it for a while. Glad it isn't something more serious.

They overfilled it on my 90 and there is an overflow somewhere. It leaked all over my wheel when I rode 100 miles. Not a lot, just enough to look messy. I checked the level after wiping the wheel down and it had plenty.
