Default '06 C50 with Vance and Hines Cruzers

Hi all, new here, been reading for a while but thought I'd register, introduce myself and ask a few questions.

First, I have around 2700 miles on my '06 C50, and decided I wanted a little louder, meaner sounding exhaust with better flow. Ended up getting the Cruzers, and so far like them, except I feel a little bit self concsious when riding through neighborhoods, just wasn't expecting them to be quite that loud

My first reaction to the pipes regarding power has been a little bit more low-end throttle response, but with a slight loss of top-end power. All I've done so far is the exhaust, but I have a K&N filter that I need to put on. What are people's experience with this? If I add the filter, am I going to lose more high rpm power? Am I imagining things? Top speed seems only slightly effected from 100-105 depending on wind/grade to 95-100 mph (on speedometer).

Lastly, and getting a little OT for the thread, I'm getting around 35 MPG when on the highway, and right around 40 MPG when driving around the city. This last tank (only about 15 miles with the new pipes), I've only gotten 33 MPG. Is this out of the ordinary? I see people are getting around 40 to 50 MPG! I am a little big heavy handed on the throttle, but generally not too bad. Anything to look for on the bike for evidence of poor running?

Enough rambling, thank in advance for the help!
