Default Tires

The tires on my 1998 V-Star Classic that I just bought look as though they are in good shape. My question is, should I replace them just for the simple fact that they are ten years old? I am the 3rd owner and the bike only has 3,500 miles on it. Is the age a safety concern?

Yes.

However........if there are no signs of cracks or checking on the sidewalls, then the concern is that the compound has become hard (less tacky and less flexible). If you have a VERY conservative riding style, you probably can use them for one season with no problem. Inspect thoroughly and often.

Having said that, if it won't cause a financial hardship....I would replace them NOW.

Great thank you, does anyone recommend a particular brand of tires?

metzler me880's seem to be the tire of choice on all the vstar forums (everyone claims they last the longest + good performance) , they are about $200 per tire.

There's alot of options to go with for tires. I use - American Motorcycle Tire for my tires. You can get white wall, but they run a bit more. The Metzlers are very good tires, but so are Avons, and Dunlops are good, just don't seem to last as long

I ended up with the Metzler WWW. Put about 250 miles on them in 3 weeks. Very nice handling and ride.
