What interesting discussion. What I ride is what I ride. I've ridden Yamahas since the 1960. My first was a 250cc 2 stroke that had the first auto oiler, so you didn't have to mix the oil. My current bike is the 2007 V Star 1300 Tourer. It is a fun bike. I like the quiet pipes. When you lose your ability to hear well, you smarten up and start protecting your ears. I think about the comment about how the speedo is inaccurate at higher speeds. Wow why would I want to drive at 100mph on the roads. I know speed is fun, I also fly airplanes. So ride what ever you like. Vulcans are great looking, suzuki makes a pretty good bike. Some models are better with certain brands than others. If you like Harley, then ride. I just like getting to where I'm going with out break downs. Well thanks for listening. Don

To Yammerhamer. I was curious about Yamaha not building their bikes. Sorry but you are mistaken, or the person who told you is mistaken. Yamaha builds the bike. It is just a model that is called the Star. It would be like saying the Ford Explorer is built by explorer for Ford. My source is the guy who owns three Yamaha dealerships. Hope that helps. Don

Offdon,

What Im talking about on the speedo can be seen at 35 mph and the degree of difference is higher at higher speeds. At 40 actual my speedo is saying ~45\46 at 70 actual I'm seeing ~78\79. I just think that it's not safe to think I'm at 40 when I'm only doing 36, and I only think that because my bike doesn't have a back bumper... I think that the bike is a great bike otherwise I just want to have my gear work as I expected when I paid for it.

It's Schwinn, BTW. And I'm glad you recognized that we are "real riders".

Jason,

I have about 2700 on mine now and I've noticed the same thing prior to my first service @600 (well it was 960 but who can pass up a nice Saturday).
Anyway prior to the service it seemed that the exhaust did change tone slightly and that the bike was a bit flat on the acceleration curve, but that changed after the service was done and the bike was back to what I consider better than new performance. I think now that it's on the high side of 2k it's smoothing out even more, although it lacks a tach crusing at 75 or so take a lot less throttle and the bike just sounds smoother.

Enjoy,
SS
Thanks, Star. I appreciate that man. I just got a big side job set up. So, SS Custom Cycle is about to get a lot of my dough. Ill check back in when shes all dressed up!

Silverstar, at around town speeds who cares if the speedo is off? I know I vary my speed based of traffic and sometimes just go slow because I can. One thought on the speedo. Tire diameter has quite an affect on overall distance the tire travels in a given revolution right? Could an underinflated or overinflated rear tire be causing this? I guess it's the bike's way of telling me to get a new lower profile tire when this skin is done.

Firedog,
I guess my point is that it's disapointing that the one gauge that the bike has doesn't work right and it nags me. (IT guy by trade) But if you think that your bike is telling you to get a new tire, well then who am I to get into that relationship?

How would it be a safety issue?

I can understand it can be a safety issue in WY where everyone travels with a handgun and an AR15.
