Unhappy Doing my own work.

Well I guess this time the salesman that sold me the S50 was right. Maybe I should have kept the maintenance contract that they first wrote up on my bike. It was $900 though!
I attempted to adjust the valves and worked from 6 to midnight and gave up and put everything back together. I do not have enough knowledge and tools to start tearing everything you have to tear apart to adjust those valves. It is the tightest quarters I have ever seen around the top of that motor, and one of the carburetors has to be removed. NO THANKS!
I will drag my tail down to the dealer and set up an appointment to have them adjusted.
It will be like taking a child in for a delicate operation! That's my baby and I don't like someone else thrashing on it! But I don't have a choice I guess. Not to mention the price they no doubt will present me with!

Default S50 Service

I decided also that, at least for now, I will have the dealer service my S50. I will do the oil and simple things like that. But when it comes to anything that may screw up my great running beautiful bike I will leave that to the experts.

They just did my first service and the bike if running great.

It's just not worth it to mess with the valves, carbs, etc..

Good luck with your bike!

Are you talking about the initial 600-mile service? I've read elsewhere that there's actually a miniscule percentage of bikes that need the valves adjusted then. If, as you say, the bike is running great, just forget about paying a dealer to check them. I did the 600-mile on my bike (except checking the valves - I just ignored it). That was 4,000 miles ago and the bike's still running fine.

Default Valves

The manual that came with the bike says to check and or adjust the valves at 4000 miles. I went to the dealer today and they said it should be fine to wait until 4000 miles unless the engine is clicking or making weird noises.
I have already changed the oil and filter and tightening all the bolts and lubricated everything the manual says to lubricate at 600 miles. I have 1700 miles on it now and it is running great so I think I will wait until the weather turns bad to get the valves adjusted.

I can't agree with what md did, since the first valve check is the most critical. That initial period is when the most abrupt wearing-in of motor parts occurs. If you're hearing clicking or other "wierd noises", damage could already be done. See, your valves tick when they're loose. It's when they wear in and get tight that the damage occurs, like valve burning and such.

Simplegame, next time just go to bed and talk to us in the morning. $900 is absurd, and you could have finished the job with no trouble.
