Default Oil Drain Plug

OK. Yesterday I did the usual oil change as always. I have done my car for 6 years and my bike has had about 6 oil changes all done by me. There's was nice fresh oil and filter installed so I ride for the afternoon. Then I go to work and work from 4-10 and head on my way home. About a mile from home I stop at a stop sign and go to make an easy right. My azz end kicks out HARD 90 degrees and I immediately pull over thinking I hit wet paint or something. Well (as I'm sure you all guessed) I must have forgotten to tighten the oil drain plug all the way. About 400 yards before I stopped; I left a solid trail of oil the wholy way. When I pulled over it looks as though I lost about 3 quarts where I stopped so I'm sure the engine is fine. Either way I feel like a complete idiot for forgetting to do something I have done so many times. So now I plan on getting up tomorrow and searching the road for a lost oil drain plug instead of looking like a retard telling the dealer I lost mine. Oh yeah, and to top it off I have to buy oil AGAIN and scrub the HELL outta my rear tire to get all the oil off it. That tire was soooooo greasy I could see my reflection. I'm just plain lucky I lost the plug on a straightaway and took my first turn on the oil soaked tire from a standstill.

I'm such an idiot you guys don't need to make fun of me; accidents happen I just figured I'd remind you guys.....................tighten that ****.

Glad you're okay!

Tighten it - yes, but only torque it to the specification! Tightening it down too much can cause it to strip the threads in the oil pan, which will cost about $100 to repair / replace.

I bought a new oil drain plug on eBay for about $6.00 - this one has a magnet at the end of the bolt to collect any metal shavings that may be floating around in the oil. I don't know if it works or not, but at least I have a spare (the original) plug at home!

Phew! I thought this was going to read, "I stripped my @#$%ing oil drain plug." Glad you were able to keep the rubber down and get it stopped before it ran dry.

I left the oil cap off of my brand new Dodge once. The interior of the engine compartment was not covered in oil, so I just bought another cap, checked the dipstick (the REAL one, not the one that left the cap off) and carried on.

Back in the early 90's, when additives were the fashion, I dumped a $15 quart of Slick-50 through my engine and into the used oil catch pan.

Thank you for making me worry. I'm at about 3,800 miles on my Gixxer. I had the dealer do an oil change at 600, and I dumped that oil at 1,800 or 2,000 and refilled with fresh. Now it's time to change the filter (first time on this bike). I also think I'm gonna' go to a synthetic (probably Mobil 1 or something else readily available). Anything tricky I need to know about removing the bodywork and all that?

I've done about 20 oil changes on Harleys and some metric cruisers in the last couple of years so I'm not too worried, but I have forgotten to put the plug in when refilling and not realized it until I almost fell down into a couple of quarts of HD Synthetic.

I've also pulled the filter prior to draining the oil (BIG mess). The stupidest thing I've done is telling a girl to get her bike good and warmed up before she brought it to me to change the oil. She did. I wasn't paying too close attention to what I was doing when I pulled the plug. SUPER hot oil all over my hand and arm. Lesson learned - no more females around when changing the oil.

On the gsxr you have those christmas trees on the very bottom under the bike holding the left and right fairing togeter just pop them out with a flat head... its the easyest thing to do... if you try to pick them out ull hurt ur nails. if the fairings dont come out easy dont force it.

On my bandit, the bodywork is held together with these littel plastic "pop rivets," that have a dot in the center. You push in the dot and it releases. To re-install, you simply push the dot back in.
