This happened last month, just thought I would give another thumbs up to gear.
I was riding home from work, on the freeway as usual. Typical 6pm traffic in Albuquerque, which means that I was pretty much boxed in, but traffic was moving at around 80 mph. I'm in the leftmost lane, which I had just moved into because a car was shifting into my lane (no signal, or course) and was weaving a bit. As soon as I get into the left lane, I hear a loud bang, and notice the car that had just cut me off start weaving and hitting it's brakes. Then I get hit with something in the helmet, hard enough to knock my head to the side. Then something else hits my leg, luckily for me on the kneepad. The guy's rear left tire had exploded, and showered me with shrapnel. I only realized it was a tire after the first piece hit my helmet and I ducked a second piece. If I hadn't been wearing my pants, it probably would have dislocated my knee again since any hard blow to my right knee seems to do that. If I hadn't been wearing my helmet, who knows if I would have been able to keep the bike up after that hard of a blow. My gear paid for itself today.
