Default from long time cruiser to sportbike rider

Ok gang, I'm new to this forum and got some questions about my new transition. I've been riding since around 3rd grade or so and I'm now 33, but all my bikes have been cruisers or mini bikes (I didn't start on a cruiser.) I just sold my last cruiser and got a used 1991 Suzuki Katana GSX 600f. I don't claim to be the most mature rider on the block, but I've been doing it a while and I'm not out to "impress". I just want to experience the fun and excightment that a sport bike can offer in terms of handling and performance. I'm sure there are many things that are different in riding sport bikes other than throttle performance and brake time as apposed to riding cruisers. Any advice from others that have gone through this would be helpful.
