Default Tips on Shifting

I need some advice on how to perform a "clean" shift. It seems that when I shift into the upper gears it tend to click, click, click and then engage. If I try and really focus on the upshift it is much smoother but I use more force.
Is there something I am not doing correctly or just being lazy and it take more effort than I thought.
I am riding a 2008 Suzuki Bandit 1250 w/ 1500 mi on it. My old Honda 750 shadow didn't seem to do it as much.
Is there a technique that I can try. I don't want to thrash the trans. anytime soon.
Thanks for your help,
Christopher.
