On a early morning ride, crossing a 2 lane river bridge to get some breakfast. Doing about 45mph and when I reach the oppisite bank a doe jumps over the guardrail and into the lane to my right (I remember very clearly the clatter her hooves made on the concrete). I get on the brakes and downshift (i think...) and the tires are squealing but the bike is straight and I'm thinking a few more seconds and I'm gonna be OK. Then the doe makes some kinda decison and jumps right into my windshield taking me down. I slid a short distance and ended up with skinned arms and legs (I know! armor is the answer!) and $5200 in damage to the bike but overall I'm lucky. So I've been replaying it in my head ever since. I wondered if I had target fixation since I think I was looking at the deer the whole time, but the guy behind me said he thought I was gonna be ok and surely he would have said something if I had been drifting toward the deer. The only thing I thought of that I didn't do was blow the horn, I just don't use my horn much and I'm thinking it might have startled her into going the other way. When I get the bike back I'm gonna try to make using the horn a concious part of my defensive mindset. Any thoughts? |
