Every time I have used my high beam I have had other riders flash me!

And I didn't intend to. I am being serious. They flash me like, "what the hell are you doing using your high beam dummy!"

I use my lows during the day. When I'm in my car, I find high beams on bikes (or cars for that matter) during the day to be annoying. Generally speaking, there are 2 kinds of drivers on the road, those paying attention, and those not. Those paying attention will see you either way. Those not paying attention are only going to see you if you cross their direct line of vision, and your high beam isn't going to make a difference whether or not they see you in between the pages of their newspaper, the cell phone ringing, the kid in the back seat throwing a tantrum and their lipstick application. Personally, I just ride no one can see me.

I would suggest caution to those that have said they flash their lights coming up to an intersection. In my 20+ years of driving, I've ALWAYS understood a flash of your lights during the day to mean a) theres a cop back there, slow down. or b) go on ahead, I'm relinquishing the right of way to you, so go ahead and turn, pull out, etc. Flashing your lights while approaching an intersection would seem to be an invitation to people to take a left in front of you.

around here, when you flash your lights and you're moving (only on a highway) it usually means to the others that a cop is nearby.

if you are slowing down and you flash you lights, it pretty much says that you yield the right of way...

i'll never flash my lights at someone unless it's to tell of a cop... i'll never do it for someone perpendicular to the road...

honk the horn, it's much safer

I have taken a different approach that I am really pretty happy with. What I have done is converted my front turn signal lights to be bright amber daytime running lights. What this does is cause your front turn signal lights to be normally bright instead of normally dim or normally off. It really makes a big difference in your visibility to others. When you go to use your turn signal the signals work and flash normally. Then when you turn the signal off they pop back to being bright. I will do a write up and post some photos.

I find oncoming bikes, or cars for that matter, with high beams to be quite annoyring even in daylight whatever I'm riding/driving. Why aggrevate other drivers that may already not have much love for cyclists. Also do you really want to interfere with the vision of someone who is riding towards you at a high rate of speed?

I originally wasn't going to reply to this thread. Yesterday while out riding I had an oncoming bike just about momentarily blind me. That reminded me once again why I don't ride with the high beam on.

I installed a moduator and replaced my stock light with a PIAA superbright. They definitely see me coming. Highly rec the moduating headlamp to all riders.
