Default gear shifting and rpm's

Hello,
I am a new rider and just purchased my first bike. It is a 2005 Suzuki Katana 600. I have a question about shifting gears. I have read the owner's manual and according to it, I should be in sixth gear around 49 mph. This is around 3800 rpm. All the shift points are around 3000 rpm. Is this conservative? I have heard and read where riders shift at higher rpm's. Not red lining. Will I damage my engine/transmission if I shift at higher rpm's?

Thanks for any input
