Question Wanting to be a new rider.

Ok, I'll save the sighs in saying that I don't want a 600cc bike for my first ride. I just want a nice looking, smooth sailing, good bike.

I've heard good things about the Ninja 250R, but I'd like to know if it's a good "hot-off-the-press" bike for me. Because the closest thing I've ridden to that is a mountain bike.

I want to ride for 2 reasons.
1. It's a good way to get around, and is a stylish... inexpensive way to do it.
2. My mom passed away recently, and a permit in california allows me to ride without a parent unlike a car permit. (Which I have but I have 3 months until my license)

I just want to know what items I'll need (besides the motorcycle), and why I'll need them.

So my questions that I'd love to have answered in a list:
1. What would be a good bike (sportsbike design, like the 600cc Yamaha R6)?
2. What accessories would I need?
3. What are good practices?
