Well, being a brand new rider, I try really hard to think about and remember everything I need to remember. And basically, I've been doing quite well. With 6 days and 250 miles under my belt, I was finally feeling a little more relaxed on my bike (at least I'm not trying to leave full finger impressions in my throttle any more). Today, I was on a nice open stretch of highway with long, gently meandering curves and rising and falling hills. It was absolutely gorgeous. I managed to get my bike up to 65 for the very first time and it was exhilirating. And then I ran out of gas...darn. That was the one thing I forgot to remember. In case you haven't had that experience, it's not as terribly scary as I thought it would be. My bike just coughed once and quietly stopped running. Nothing locked up and I was able to coast quietly to the shoulder. At first, I didn't know what was wrong. I couldn't figure out why my bike quit on me. But it didn't take me long to remember that this was Friday and it was Tuesday when I last filled up. The gas tank on a Savage holds about a much as the gas tank on a Tonka truck. I've ridden nearly 150 miles since Tuesday. So, I switched her over to reserve, cranked her up, and rode to the nearest gas station. I know it's not much, but it was an experience and a lesson for this newbie. |
