I did the same thing with my Duc, which stalled halfway through picking up from a lean. Yup, dropped it on the spot. Problem was....when I have my left foot down to hold my bike, I have to slide off from my seat which mean my right leg is waaaaay up. So when the bike started to fall to the right, I had no time to slide myself to the other side before it fell. I envy that you can at least use your let as a kick stand, muscles hurting or not. In my case, I have no such chance. So I usually fill it up before the light even starts blinking! And when I does, I get REALLY nervous and will look for a gas station putting aside anything else.

Anville, hope you get her fixed up quickly. Kay, I think you have the right idea and since my little experience I am also worried about what could happen in another situation where I would be moving forward faster than I was. The rule now... keep the tank as full as possible.
