Default Deer SUCK!!!!

So i'm riding home from work yesterday in the right lane of a 3 lane interstate, and i see a deer standing on the left shoulder about 150 yards up. Theres a decent amount of traffic on the road and i'm doing about 70, so i start to roll off the throttle anticipating this whitetails mad dash across traffic...and then it happens with about 50 yards to spare....

He clears the left lane, guy in the middle lane in front of me stands on his brakes as i am really getting on mine....Well the guy in front of me thinks he is in the clear, but the deer jumps into my lane, and the SUV in front of me clips his hind quarters with the right side of his bumper and spins him around in the lane....Then it becomes DeRiggi vs. The deer with about 20 yards to go, with another oblivious drive coming up on my a$$ hard....Deer starts wobbling and i am braking but know if i stop, its gonna be right on him, and the guy behind me is going to clip me....If i go right, the deer sure looks like he is trying to go right and the shoulder has a bunch of debris, and i have another SUV to the left of me....So i pick a line and decide to ride the white lane marker.....

Mr. Whitetail decides he wants to go where i am going, so at 15 miles per hours i have to revert back to my MSF lessons, and to make a long story not too much longer, i probably could have stuck out my foot and kicked him if i wanted to.

Pulled over on the shoulder behind the truck that hit him, pulled out a cigarette and the guy in the SUV told me that it was some of the best motorcycle driving he has seen in a while considering all of that happened in about 4 seconds, and if he was on his bike he wouldn't have been able to avoid.....

Goes to show being aware of your surroundings pays off when you can predict what might happen and be prepared.

My uncle wasn't as lucky.. Goldwing versus deer. Neither won. I don't think he's going to replace his cycle anytime soon.

Wow, that will get your heart thumping!
It isn't enough to try and avoid the deer, that cage driver behind you is usually dialing the cellphone and oblivious to the excitement in front of him. Sounds like awareness of the situation gave you just enough time to react. Glad you made some quick moves, I'd much rather read a story like this than an accident report.

Heart thumping and almost in need of a new pair of boxers......

Everytime i get on the bike and start to feel relaxed, i always remind myself what the MSF instructor told our class about being aware of your surroundings at all times and scanning the entire landscape for potential hazards, and it saved my life as far as i am concerned.

You pulled out a cigarette?! Don't you know that stuff can kill you?!

J/K, glad to see your safe. Situations like that makes me glad I carry around extra underwear.

So..... did the deer survive?

I wish I had time to draw a picture of a deer smoking a cigarette standing on the side of the road with you talking to the guy in the SUV saying to you "so, you wanna do it again?" LOL.

Joking aside... good moves man. However you accomplished it, you came out alive.

Rode past yesterday and was wondering the same thing....He made it off the road, but he was clipped pretty well....doubt he got too far....He did deserve a cigarette for his evasive actions though

that was like a suspense novel, nice writing but I do wish you'd made the story longer as you had me on the edge of my seat!

glad to hear everything's in one piece.

Blue M50 riders got mad skillz (you'd make napoleon dynamite proud)!

perhaps a new badge for the signature line is order. i don't know, maybe something with a swervy line and deer pieces flying about...lol

Deer Whistles Can Help Reduce Accidents

I live in an area where the good twisty rides have a large deer population, these whistles really work and can help prevent a tragic circumstance.

I used to use the old powered by air whistle that seemed to help too.
