Red face I hate interstate's!!!!

Well, did my longest ride to date today (220 miles). Rode wtih two buddies to trade in one of their bikes (an 800 Vulcan for an FZ-1). We did mostly interstate riding on I-294 up to Kenosha. Semi's can be scary, but what really sucked was the crosswinds. Wow!!! holy ...t!!!

Nothing like getting blown sideways by a strong crosswind while doing 70 m.p.h.!!!.. when we got to the dealership, I felt like I'd ridden sideways all the way up!!!

Nope, not for me...from now on, interstates are only for time sensitive trips!!!

Agreed. They're nice when you have to do a thousand miles in a day, though.

I agree as well. if i have 250 mile or more to go i will lean towards the slab or if i need to get there now. other than that back roads are choice.

Their nice if you need to get somewhere quick but then again our highways are always jacked up with construction.

Just lean into the wind more! Besides wind is nothing on the M50 it doesn't even have a fairing

I still haven't really understood the need to cover 1000 miles in one day. The longest run I've done alone in a car was about 850 km (550 miles) in one day - from Basel, Switzerland to Stuttgart, Germany, then on to Frankfurt, Germany and back down to Basel. The ride was almost all Autobahn and I was exhausted by the time I got back home.

The longest one-day run I've done on my bike was about 480 km (300 miles). Once across the Schwabishe Alb and the Black Forest (where the weather varied from sunshine to pouring rain), and once a few weeks ago across Switzerland.

I love riding my motorcycle, but rides of more than about 200 miles per day are uncomfortable. I mostly notice the distance in my knees and lower back. Maybe I need to hit the gym again and try to strengthen those regions before next season.

Well, if you've planned your entire trip around it, including all your accomodations, the need is pretty great. I'm sure there are better reasons, including personal goals, but that was my big one.

The longest I've ever ridden in a cage is 770 miles (non-stop). I went to the tip of Vermont (sister lives there) and back.

I doubt very much I will ever look to get that fatigued while riding on my bike.
In the cage it isn't that big of a deal...I got air bags & can take naps while driving (I just close one eye)...but no way would I do that on the bike.

Heck, I don't know about your need to cover 1k miles in one day, but I think you're much more likely to get close to 1k-per-day living in TX than you would living in Europe.

In TX, you can go WELL OVER that 550 miles distance that took you from Switzerland to Germany and back and YOU WOULD STILL BE IN TX!
There's something psychologically negative about driving all day and NOT getting out of your home-state, so I know many Texans feel "the need" to drive close to 1k in a day when traveling out of TX.

Pfft.

Switzerland is small. We know this. The country is slightly less than twice the size of New Jersey. It is no problem to cross the country in half a day.

Germany is slightly smaller than Montana, turned on its side.

I know people who have done 1000 miles in one day - it's easy. Just head down from Germany toward Andalusian, Spain. You have to cross France and most of Spain to get there. The speed limit in France and Spain is 130 kmh (80 mph), so you can cover 1000 miles in about 14 to 16 hours without busting your bladder. But this isn't fun - it's like Clint said: If you need to get somewhere, then you put your head down and go. If you are driving or riding for the sake of the journey, you'll do less mileage (and enjoy the scenery).

Well which is it inspiron?...

your previous post states:

"The longest run I've done alone in a car was about 850 km (550 miles) in one day...The ride was almost all Autobahn and I was exhausted by the time I got back home."

You were "exhausted" after 550 miles, but yet you also state "it's easy" to do 1,000 miles? Am I missing something?

I think he was talking about the route being easy....in order to obtain 1,000 mile ride.

Is it still Monday & someone forgot to tell me?

Yup, that's what I meant. It is easy to find a 1000+ mile route across Europe. You can also do 1000 miles inside of Sweden, Norway or Finland.

But regardless of where you're going, doing that many miles in 24 hours is exhausting. And doing it on 2 wheels required an excellent physical and mental condition - I don't think I can concentrate that long anymore.

oooohhhhh, that's what you meant.
OK.

+1 on the 1k miles in 24hrs on 2 wheels.
I KNOW I can't concentrate that long.
Heck, I never could concentrate very long, not even as a youngster.

Just reading about all this long distance riding is making my butt sore.

It's a bit of a stretch to call it easy, even on the 'Bahn. Well, maybe on a GoldWing.

Wow, you didn't even read that did you? He explained that it is easy to find a 1K mile route even though switzerland is small, but it is extremely exhausting and he would never have the need to do that.

A goldwing is like driving a big freaking couch with wheels. I'm sure I would have an easier time trying to do 1k miles on one of those...especially when compared to my M50.
