Default Properly fitted helmet

Time and time again I see folks out on the road with helmets that do not fit. Of course, wearing a helmet is important, but proper fit could mean the difference between helmet ejection or possibly increased head trauma, even if the helmet stays on.

Tip #1 There are different types of helmet shapes, just like there are different shapes of heads. Is your head oval or round? Being able to answer this question could help you better decide on the helmet that's right for you. I can tell when I am wearing a helmet designed for a round head because I have a pressure point on my forehead from the styrofoam. My RF1000 Shoei is def an oval helmet and fits me great.

Tip #2 When you are trying on helmets, remember that they will ALWAYS "break in" and become more loose on your head. Going with a very snug helmet is better than getting one that fits you almost too loosely because it's more confortable. When I first bought my new helmet, it actually made my cheeks a little sore, but now it's the most comfortable helmet I have ever had.

Tip #3 Once you have a helmet on, if you push the chin part up, it shouldn't slide right off your head. Same with the back, it should not push right off.

Tip #4 Look in the mirror, do you have chipmunk cheeks? If not, it's too big.

Tip #5 Now, here is where I back peddle a little. Wear the helmet around the store for about 15-20 minutes. If you feel a spot that is pushing against your head/face, check to see if it's stirofoam or padding. If it's padding, it will break in and give, unless it's insanely uncomfortable. If it's styrofoam, then put the helmet back and get another.

This may have been posted before, but I figured a little reminder wouldn't hurt. Just to add, for those of you who wear dirt bike helmets because you ride adventure/on off road bikes, THESE WILL NOT PROTECT YOU AS WELL!!! Please get a street helmet if you want to protect yourself.
