Default Which Gear should I be in?

Hey another question from the BOSS,

I'm a little confused from all the input from the racer type riders that I go to school with so I'll get more input from you guys. What gear should I be in while riding through town without burning my bike up before I get a 100 miles on it. I normally ride between 25mph and 45 mph through my neighborhood.
Sometimes i'll get up to 55 - 60 mph on a long stretch. Should I be cruising in 3rd, 4th or even 5th at those speeds?

If you're just cruising, stay at the low end of the powerband. I'd say that's around 3000 to 3500 for you. If you're riding sport through the back roads, you might want to be a few hundred higher. Some don't like to get too low because power is lacking should you need to make an evasive maneuver. Of course, the higher it's spinning the more gas you'll burn. I'm usually in 4th in town and 5th at speeds over 45 or so.

Don't worry too much. After a few thousand miles you'll get a feel for it and won't have to think so much.

Your right, I do tend to think alot while I'm riding. I ask alot of questions so I can learn more and have different opinions in every area of riding. thx for the info

Rowdy's right - don't think too much about it. Keep the RPMs at the low end of the power curve so that you have plenty of reserve if you need it, but you are running efficiently (low fuel consumption) during the ride. Don't let the motor bog down (no reserve if you need to do a quick maneuver) or run too high (waste of fuel, higher wear).
