Default Don't try to teach your girlfriend how to ride

At least don't try if you are as unqualified to do so as I am. My bike got a 0 mph drop in the school parking lot. Girlfriend got a scatched elbow (through the heavy sweatshirt I made her wear) and the bike got a knocked loose clutch handle (easily moved back and tightened up) and a scraped foot peg rubber. Now I will let her wait for the MSF class in two months so somebody who nows how to teach her can help her out. She really wanted to try, now she feels that she can wait...

I guess when you're slowed down to zero mph, it becomes hard to balance. She was trying to shift so her left foot was not where it should have been at a stop.

Nobody hurt, no real damage. Wait for a real teacher. Lesson learned.

Good to see you learned your lesson with no harm done.
Also good to see you have the bottle to post an admission of guilt!Ha ha!

What I should have said regarding the MSF class is that it won't hurt my feelings to have her gain some skills using a trainer bike I don't have to fix!

I don't have any idea how to explain to somebody who has never ridden before how to steer, balance, etc. She asked me "How can you drive it that slow around the parking lot without falling over?"

Hell, I just do it...

I'm looking forward to that she and I taking that darn class, I suspect it will be fun and and it won't hurt my riding skills or *MY* bike either.

I just wanted to add that I just bought myself a 02 gixxer 600. I dads g-f always wanted a streetbike but my dad had talked her into getting a buell blast to learn on. So 3 days after I got my bike we wanted to try to ride. So I figured I would let her since she would let me ride down my street on her bike when I had no permit and she had no insurance. I figured it was the least I could do. So we went to the school parking lot. Parked the bike and placed it on the kick stand. She was a excited she jumped on. Took a few seconds thinking about herself riding on it. Wipped the bike up off the kick stand. Centered it for a second before it proceeded to go down on its other side. Man did that hurt seeing my new baby fall the first time without moving, out of my hands to stop. Minor damage, broken front blinker and scratches in the suzuki decal. so she bought me new decal and blinker but...

WORD to the WISE. Let the female practice on a test bike from a riding class. I will hurt more seeing your bike go down than getting hide for telling her that she is not allowed to drop urs.

Even better: Don't teach anyone (male or female) how to ride on your bike unless they have the $$ with them to pay for any damage! I've seen way too many posts of friends letting their friends try out the bike only to dump it.

IMO, if you want to ride buy your own bike and take the MSF beginner course.

Oh she was lucky! Exact same thing happened to me while I was taking the TEST for the MSF, but I fell with the bike on me, and tore the AC joint in my shoulder. They actually let me get back on the bike and re-do the exercise since I pretended I was OK. But after passing the test, I had to go straigh to the Emergency. Was in a sling for two months.

Glad to hear that she made out better than I did....it hurt like a b$tch!

Wow! Stella you were lucky also! We were told that dropping the bike during the test was one of two instant disqualifiers. The other was an intentional unsafe act!

Default In my experience . . .

It's better if you don't try and teach your girlfriend anything! It's taken many years to have this beaten into my skull.

When someone asks me if they can ride my bike, this is the reply they get:

"Only if I can ride your girlfriend."

Rule one of motorcyling: get your own darn bike, 'cause "HELL NO YOU CAN"T RIDE MINE!!!!"

And don't sit on it either, unless I offer. Yes, this means women also. I don't just walk up, open the door, and get behind the wheel of your car without asking, so what makes you think you can just walk up and sit on my bike?

Even when I sell a bike, the test-driver must pay for the bike in full, in CASH, if they can ride it. If they decide they don't want it, or feel there is something wrong with the bike, they can return it within 15 minutes or 15 miles, in the same condition they took it in, and get their money back.

Yeah, it really annoys me when I see people just walk over to my bike and sit on it. Grrrrrrrrr.

Yeah, my boyfriend tried to teach me how to ride...it doesn't work. I ended up dropping it in the parking lot the first day as well and got frustrated with him because I was just trying to learn to balance on the thing going in a straight line and he was trying to make me start swerving around pop bottles, etc!!

In Proficient Motorcycling, David Hough says that the worst riders are the ones that were taught by a family member or friend. Best thing I ever did: Not ride my bike on the street until I took the class. I would ONLY ride in a cemetery by my house.

My wife wants to learn how to ride, but there's no way I'm letting her learn on my bike!! She thinks she could ride it, but her feet don't even touch the ground when she sits on it.

Ever considered getting a new girlfriend? My wife's smarter than me by a long shot.

Since my original post was twisted into something different than was intended by a smart remark, I'll just edit this one.

No, I'm not, and there's no need for you cross-post something that has nothing to do with this topic and intentionally try to start a debate. I was tyring to pay my wife a compliment, not give you fodder for mouthing off.
