Default Parking lot practice tip

Never try to use a Catholic High School parking lot to practice your riding skills in. Every parking spot had broken glass, fast food spooge, huge oil leak spots and sundry other impediments to the smooth operation of asphalt.

If that is how the Catholic school parking lot looks, just imagine how the public school lot must be ... used condoms, needles, spoons and lighters ???

Don't kid yourself, those items are in the Catholic school parking lots too.

Try a big company parking lot or a federal government parking lot. Of course, for me, being in Ottawa, this is pretty easy. Especially since my company lends their parking for the Experienced Rider Course. In the Spring, they get the parking lot cleaned of the sand for this reason alone.

If you can not find some traffic cones to use, 2 liter pop bottles work, fill with water coloured with kool aid.

The other day at Walmart, I saw little orange cones being sold in the sporting
goods dept. Just a thought...

No place is safe for riding practice, so you always must check out the scene prior to manouvers. Take even the White House for instance. Spent condoms from the last regime, dog poop and most recently birdshot pellets left behind by Cheney's shooting practice.

I guess my point is that we always need to be vigilant. I recall when taking my riding course at the Yamaha parking lot in north Toronto, there was lots of loose garbage and gravel/sandy areas throughout. Maybe this is not necessarily a bad thing though since it kind of simulates typical everyday environments a rider encounters.

It may not be the ideal spot to practice my riding skills, but it's excellent for providing impromptu burnout demonstrations!

I practicing in empty industrial streets on a sunday morning...there's a few in my area that are perfect with no spots where a car can suddenly appear. It's pretty cool being so deserted, in fact it allows me to ride up on the sidewalk too to practice my control riding in narrow places (good practice for lane splitting heh heh)

Hey, I graduated from high school 24 years ago, but my father still reminds me of the time I was suspended for doing a burnout (with my cage) over a speed-bump in the school parking lot...

There are some things that parents NEVER forget ...

Yes, yes I know. I am still constantly reminded of the stupid thing I've done going back to when I was 5 yrs old (not that I can remember much). Of course, my comment was in jest as I have always held the anti-public stunting/showboating platform. I have also made 'the pledge' and intend to comply with it. This means even if the opportunity presents itself, a pair of hot legs in short skirts will NOT arouse the urge to showboat. I don't know how to do a burnout anyways...

Back then, with my old Mercury Cougar and a 351 cubic inch engine, it wasn't hard.

I can even do a (front end) burnout with my VW Golf TDI, but I'm too cheap to do that very often. Do you know how much tires cost these days

It's prety hard to light the back tire up on the M 50. It can be done, but it's not easy. Your Honda on the other hand, is a piece of cake. Put her in 1st gear, get both feet on the ground, center the bars, clamp down hard on the front brake, work the gas with the palm of your hand, and ease the clutch out. The back end will raise up as it unloads the rear suspension, and the back tire will break loose, and start to spin. One word of caution, unless you have verry good balance, don't try and drive through it, it will get sideways on you. Just keep the brake on, let off the gas, and pull the clutch in. Always keep the front tire where it has good traction, but you can put the back tire on sand, or a painted white line, and it will break loose easer.
