Default Chain vs Belt vs ???

::Hoists n00b flag again::

Power from the motorcycle's engine needs to be transferred to the rear wheel for the motorcycle to be anything more than a noisy piece of art. There are chain drive systems and there are belt drive systems.

Is there something else?

What are the differences? Surely each has its own benefits and drawbacks.

There is also shaft drive.

Chains, performance wise are the best option, they transfer power effectively and allow the use of different sprockets to fine tune a bike to your needs. Downside is they require constant care, cleaning and lubing and tightening.

Belts are quieter, require less care ( no lubing ) but will affect performance since they will stretch more than a chain under hard acceleration and will absorb some of the energy from the drivetrain and of course require tightening.

Shaft drives are basically maintenance free, just change the oil every couple of years, downside is that they do use up some power so are not considered performance friendly but for hassle free touring/cruising no hassle riding they are popular.
