Why are there and what' the difference in the format pix show up in posts? Some are huge! Some thumbnails all in a box, some in unframed column, etc.

The thumbnail pictures have been "attached" to the post by clicking the "Go Advanced" button (below the reply box), then using the "Manage Attachments" button to upload up to 3 photos per posting.

The larger photos are hosted elsewhere on the 'net (e.g. flickr, picasa, or other photo sharing site) and are displayed "in-line" using the button or the [img] tag.
