Default Picking up an 07 SV650s in a few weeks, need some advice.

If bike dealers are as slimey as car dealers I would imagine that the sticker price on a new bike is a far cry from what one who fights for a good price would expect to pay. However, this is my first bike, so I am really unsure about how low to try and push a new dealer, also I hear riding gear is also really easy to get out of the deal. Best price I've been quoted over the phone so far is 6,450.

So far I think im going to try to push for 5,800 or 5,900 along with a pair of riding boots since I already have a helmet.

Does anyone here know pricing specifics that can give me some advice? I know its peak season so prices are up but I think that the sticker price is a bit high. If it helps im buying the bike in Greensboro, NC.

Thanks!

I hate bargaining prices... so I can't really offer advice.

Good luck.

Yeah, it's gonna be tough in the spring, but if you're patient you'll get it. Go in, meet a salesperson you can stand to deal with, and make your offer. Be respectful, but firm, explaining that this amount is what you're willing to spend. If they don't like it, leave a business card or note with your name, number and offer, and walk away. They'll call. SV's are plentiful, so you can afford to lose one to another buyer while getting the deal you want.

As a new rider, though, I'd spend 2 grand less for a clean used one.

+1

Not wise to get a brand new bike for your 1st..... IMO its never wise to get a brand new bike. The dealer markup is rediculous!

other strategies that i've heard of is e-mailing dealers in neighbouring areas and getting e-mails of "lowest OTD" prices for the bike you want, preferably with a contact name so that when you buy, they get the sale 'no questions asked'. you'd have to find a way to actually get them to treat you as a serious buyer, and you should be close enough that making the trip out there is something they think you'd likely do anyways. using that, shop around and try to get a local guy to match or beat the e-mailed prices. but if they won't and you can save $500 by taking a 1hr drive, then that's probably worth it.

some stores / dealers might even have online pricing that isn't MSRP. there's a few stores in montreal (1.5 hours away from where i am in ottawa) that show their sticker prices online and they're usually 10% lower than MSRP. local dealers sticker everything with MSRP. right there with no effort, someone can save around 10% on a new bike.

Try to buy used, especially if it's your first bike. The SV-650's are pretty reliable (and available) and you could buy your own boots and still have many hundreds left over.

These bikes have been produced for several years and are proven mounts. The specifications haven't changed really at all so you can save some serious dough.
