Default Starting problems, Intruder VL1500LC, Solenoid/starter/generator?

Hello Everyone,

I had some problems tonight with my Intruder 1500LC, I went to start it and the starter kicked in just briefly then everything went dead, I waited a few minutes and tried again and the same thing. I finally got it to turn over and start but when it was running, all lights were "flickering" while idling and seemed to get worse when increasing the throttle, I am thinking perhaps it could be the starter(dead spot?), alternator(generator) or solenoid. Has this ever happened to anyone? Could it be something more serious? It almost sounds like something is shorting out.

Thanks in advance for any and all information leading to a resolution.

Chuck

lights flickering?
worse when increasing throttle?

heh. sounds EXACTLY what happened to my bike.

i'd suggest you check your battery terminals... mine was like that for weeks... then i took a long trip and kept dying.

long story short, the battery terminals were loose. tighten those puppies out and see if the flickering stops... if it does, take it for a 20 min ride reving high enough for the battery to charge back up...

get back home (or my favourite, on top of a hill) and try starting again.

if it starts, then it was the terminals... if you still get the problems starting, it may be related to the C90 problem some have on here

It REALLY sounds like a loose connection somewhere.

If they are tight at the battery terminals, check the OTHER end of those big cables. Could be a main fuse loose or going bad.......or loose wire on ignition switch.

Pretty unlikely but it could be an intermittant connection INSIDE the battery.

Once the bike is running, the starter and solenoid are out of the picture.

i would doubt the main fuse/relay would be damaged... but who knows...

best thing to check is
1) battery connections
2) other end of the battery connections

since one is the main ground and it's good
could be a faulty fuse/relay or bad battery or loose connection in the battery...

i'd say if everything is tight, get the battery tested

it's the vibrations causing the headlight to flicker..

also, did you ever notice your signal lights flashing faster sometimes?

Thanks everyone for the quick responses, turns out it was a loose connection on the positive side of the battery, it was arching so much that the terminal was almost gone, DOH! Tightened it back up, everything is fine and awaiting a new battery.

Glad you found the problem; sorry it cost you a new battery!

Stick around for a while. Maybe you can lend some help to somebody else.

(Please fill in your bike and location in your profile.)
