Not a very large one though.

On the same note IE is our only option at work, which I would venture to say is the same for most of the corporate world. So mayme it could be tweeked.

I have IE 6 at work and IE 7 at home I don't have this issue.

I think I've found something worse than IE.

On one of my web sites, I've created a survey which uses HTML forms. On IE and Firefox, it works fine - when the user hits "submit", it displays their answers and verifies that all questions have been answered. If not, they have a "back" button which returns to the previous page. With both FF and IE, the form values are carried back, so that the user just has to answer the one question that was not clicked before.

I've had several complaints from Mac users with Safari - there, when they return to the previous page, all form data is lost. Stupid browser...!

i closed it and tried to get into M-J.... same problem, it redirects and looks like i'm not logged in, which i then have to go into FAQ or something and then it sees me logged in..

And btw, I don't think it has something to do with cookies and/or cache, because I tried it on my brand new computer and it's the same story here.
The issue you have described is most definitely related to your browser not handling cookies properly.

Do what Clint said. Clear your cookies and cache and if you have a little thing to clear the passwords, do it too.
In IE Tools | Options | Privacy, set the slider all the way down to "Accept All Cookies." The default setting is Medium and, because IE is worthless crap, this setting will not handle login cookies properly.
In IE Tools | Options | General, hit the button that says "Settings" next to Browsing History. In the section that says "Check for newer versions of stored pages:" Make sure that "Every time I visit the webpage" is checked. The default setting in IE is "Automatically" which will cache the page and cause the problem you are talking about.

Alternately, you could install Firefox, which is smart enough to do all of this by default.

so it's safe to assume that the forum is generally geared for firefox only?

same problem happens with IE7, IE6 and chrome...
heh.

Noooo... it's safe to assume that the software is written to web standards, and that Firefox handles it properly. IE does whatever it wants, without regard for what the rest of the world is doing.

There is still a chance that the forum software has a bug, but our programmer has looked it over and given it a clean bill of health.

When will people learn that any thing made by Microsoft does not conform to any worldwide standard? They do whatever they want and believe that they can become the standard by sheer numbers in one market.

I guess it worked for them in the 90's with Windows and the Office platform, but times have changed.

That one site on the net doesn't work satisfactory for me isn't the end of the world. Like in Opera which I used, this was an everyday happening. Just adding lots of "funny stuff" doesn't say it does work.
More cooks, more spill... !
IE is simple, but yet, it is the one that works with the least amount of flaws for me.
I've never experienced this login issue at any other site on the net before this one, so the problem is this site.
This site should change, not the users, because we are MANY !

Are you willing to loose users just because they're not using the browser YOU say is best ?
Many users don't even know what a browser is, and therefor are not capable/willing enough to change it.

The user/customer must win if you wanna win...

1) I'm using IE right now on my work computer with no problems whatsoever. The problem is in your configuration. Guaranteed.

2) If you're unhappy with the site's performance, feel free to request a refund. I'm sure you'll get a check shortly.

I'm still having problems with log on here and no where else. I log in once, puter says I am logged on, then goes to the guest page. No matter what I click on I remain as a guest. I close, don't log off, log on again and am directed to the guest page. Now I can click on any thread and am logged on. Kinda a pain as I don't have any issues with any other sites where I log on to. I am no puter wizard just trying to figure out how to log on once. Also, unlike other forums I am on, this one automatically logs me off after a short time, 30 min or so. Suggestions other than SA comments???

I'm starting to suspect we have a software problem, but I've had no luck getting our guy to fix it. Sorry. I'll try again.

is there some kind of server side cookie caching going on?
i am kinda a puter wizard... i can't figure this one out...

you'd almost need to get your guy to watch as vinnie logs in and see what the server sees. hard to do, but that's what he'd have to do.

i'll bet the server sees successful login, while the pc on the other end goes to guest page.

vinnie, use another browser and see if that fixes it...
sounds like an application bug.. maybe microsoft patched IE and it caused a server/client problem...

i use google chrome if i'm at work now. it works. IE doesn't.

It's definitely worth at least trying another browser. This is part of the troubleshooting process.

If it works fine on another browser, then the problem is in your IE config.
If it fails on another browser, then the problem is with the site.

Our programmer tells me he reset the cookie path (whatever that means). Lemme know what happens.

All I can offer at this point is that you clear your cache and delete old M-J cookies to try and refresh your status.
