Default Rev Limit

I though all fuel injected bikes had a rev limiter, but yesterday while doing speed runs with a couple of friends found my SV650 at 11,000 RMPs for a milisecond.

I have to say at that point there was no HP left to squeeze, but for the first time I did not changed gears between 9,000 - 9,500 (I was busy looking ahead) ... I though I would hit the rev limiter ... apparently there is none.

Comments?

According to the service manual for my bike, the rev-limiter is at 9,200 rpm. I'll take the book's word for it ... I've never had it rev that high.

Mmmmmmmmmmm ...

I'm going to take it to the shop for them to take a look. I knew it would go up to 10K without problem, but it going to 11k worries me as I can not be looking down all the time to make sure I do not blow the engine if for whatever reasson I can not shift.

The peak power (based on many sites) comes at around 9,300. it stays flat until about 9,600 and then decreases. By 10,000 you start losing inertia.

Thanks,

Serge

i thought peak power on the SV was at 10500 rpms... at least for the k5. ive been past 11k rpms, didnt mean too... and i hit the rev limiter. i didnt see at what rpm but id guess at 11500 rpms.

lookin in the SV manual and it says under break-in: maximum engine speed recommendation is below 10500r/min over 1000 miles.

P-Low,

I did not get to the limiter, but at least I know that all K5s get there. The HP numbers came from the first FI model, it may be that the K5 is slightly better. In any case, all engines give you extra RPMs while loosing power. Normally your max power is hit before you reach readline.

I spoke to a tech and he said that you can actually go up to 12K ... NOT RECOMENDED, but that the rev limiter will let you go further and then bring you back to the limit ... so you do not loose power. All this happens in a second.

Cheers,

cool

ya i did a lil search on dyno numbers and found that peak power was at about what you said.

i do know that the sv650s produces more power than the nakid version... and i think i read somewhere that the power curve is different for k5 and makes a lil more power than previous sv's. earliest dyno i saw was this one for a 2002 nekid and a 2003 svs

I really doubt that the faired version makes more power. More likely, they were dyno'd on different days at different facilities. Either that or it was just random variations.

As far as differences between the S and the naked go, the most obvious is the front fairing on the S model. Other differences are:

S model has clip-ons (much lower than the naked's bar's)
S model has pegs roughly one inch back, and one inch higher up.
Swingarm/chain lengths are SLIGHTLY different between the 2. Not sure which one has the longer swingarm tho.
S model has 44t rear sprocker, naked has 45.
S model front brake master cylinder is different....remote reservoir on it.
