Smile Suzuki GSX-R250 ok for newbie??

Hey im jono and and i recently got interested in bikes. In NZ we have to stay under 250cc till we get our full license. I have been looking at a couple of bikes and the GSXR250 appealed to me (looks etc). Do you think this has to much power for a complete newbie? It has a top speed between 180kph which is about 100-110 mph i think. open road speed limit is 100kph and i dont plan to go 180 at all. Its a '87 and its from a dealer who wants about NZD$5000 which is about probly $3-4000 american. i have never ridden a bike but im going to do a motorcycle course before i get my license and get a bike.

Is this to much bike for me???

The bike will be more than fine for your riding ability, should have a lot of fun on it!

The reason they have the law where you can't rise anything bigger than a 250 is so that you can't start out on a bike that will be too much for newbs.

Holy crap that's expensive! Unless bikes cost more across the board over there, you're getting screwed on that one. Nothing from the 80's should cost more than $2000.

Welcome!

The Dealer wants way to much for that bike. I would not pay that much for it.

You can get an RGV 250 for about half that price and it would be 5 years newer!

Whoa, too expensive! I wouldn't pay over $800 USD for a small displacement 80's bike, and that's being generous! Call me a cheapskate if you must...

yea i could probly talk the dealer down quite a bit though.
maybe its cos the market isnt so big over here that its more expensive i dunno.

some other bikes that are for sale round here are:

'87 Yamaha FZR 250
'90 Suzuki RGV 250
Kawasaki ZXR 250
and a ZXR250C version

are any of these much better than the other?

Are parts easy to get for 80s bikes over there? Just something you may want to think about. Parts are easier to get for some bikes than for others. Ask around before you buy.

You will have a load of fun on the RGV 250 in my opinion. In good nick it will make 55 HP and be extremely quick and handles like a dream. That is my recomendation. As long as you keep after it maintenance wise you will have loads of fun. Parts are readily available so no problem there.
