Default Gas tank spec.????

I own an 02 GSXR 600 and I have no idea what size gas tank it has and also when the gas light comes on how much gas do I still have in the tank. And what octane gas do you all use?

No owners manual? Nice bike btw i just bought a 03 750. A quick question for all, I just barely put on 70 miles on my 750 and the gas light already came on (Starting with a full tank). That does not sound right, 70 miles and gas light comes on? Most people get about 150, correct?

Edit: Not sure but I do think yours hold 4.5 gal a tank? not sure when reserve comes on though

Hello there, biker. The size of your 02 GSX-R600 tank is 18.00 litres [4.76 gallons].

As far as the "Gas light" is concerned, your setup is probably the same as mine. I have a 2000, and the light starts flashing when you have 1.1 gallons left. The light comes on solid [not flashing], when you have 0.7 gallons left in the tank.

I use premium fuel.. the highest crap available. I was advised by a couple bikers to fill up with the cheap regular gas for a couple of fillups, and compare my gas mileage. In a lot of vehicles, the gas mileage really isn't all that different with the cheap gas.. and at the current gas prices? It may be to your [and my] financial benefit.

Hope that helps.

Oh so that would explain why i cant never put more than about 3.5 gals in there when the light comes on. I thought when the light came on that the tank was basically empty. Thanks for the info.
Oh yeah I get about 150 miles per tank from full but I could possbily get a lil more now that I know the light means I have 1.1 gals left.

Absolutely. My light starts flashing at exactly 150 miles [give or take .5 mile]. It's really consistent. I can squeeze 190 to 195 miles into a tank, if I really need to.

On my SV, the tank is supposed to be 17 litres. THe light is supposed to flash when 4 litres is left (1.1 US gallon) and full solid with 1.5 litres (0.3 US gallon). Although last time I wait for the full solid and could only get 14 litres in there... sure the bike wasn't straigth as it was on the side stand but still...

You really need to get your MOM from somewhere ASAP, like your local Suzuki dealer.

MOM = Motorcycle Owners Manual?

Look in your manual man......also it should say what octane gas to use on a sticker ON THE GAS TANK. If that sticker isn't there you should REALLY buy an owners manual from the dealer. The manual will tell you what gas to use and how big your tank is.

Your gas light flickers when you're low? Mine turns soild at like 130 miles. Maybe they redesigned that feature on the 04 Gixxers?

Well actually I have the manual and I dont recall seeing that in it. And I did not buy my bike from a dealer I bought it from a private owner and he has a tank pad over the sticker on the tank. And I read the book on the gas thing I just wanted to know what octane some other people were using. I use 93 octane by the way just wanted some simple answer thats all.

My 04 GSXR 600 calls for 87 octane. I've tried higher grades and saw no difference......so I just stay with the cheap gas. Don't assume yours runs the same as mine though. I don't have a single friend with a 600cc equivalent to mine whose runs on less that 93. Strange huh but I'm not complaining.

I had to post this little update..

Depending on where you live, you probably have a Chevron station or "Mickey's Convenience Store". Chevron advertises that their gas contains "Techron", which is supposed to be some kind of additive that is good for your engine. Their gas, on average, is anywhere from 2-9 cents higher per gallon than the cheap "poo-poo" gasoline [as my mechanic friend calls it.]

I filled up at Chevron with Premium fuel [$2.719/gal] the other day. I usually don't, because of the cost.. but I decided to try it. As I stated above somewhere, my 1.1gal light usually starts flashing when I hit the 150 mile mark. I was out on a real long ride into nowhere tonight, and I got all the way to 167 miles before it started flashing! That's an extra 17 miles, which I think is a lot, especially considering the cost of gas.

Here's the math.

Average fillup, ~$9.75.
Chevron fillup, ~$10.75

Average miles per tank, ~150.
Chevron miles per tank, ~167, difference of 17 miles per tank.

Average gas, 4.7gallons - 1.1 gal light [comes on at 150miles] = 3.6 gallons
Chevron gas, 4.7gallons - 1.1 gal light [comes on at 167miles] = 3.6 gallons

Average gas-> 150 miles / 3.6 gal = 41.7 mpg
Chevron gas-> 167 miles / 3.6 gal = 46.4 mpg

Average gas, cost per mile -> $9.75 / 150 = 6.5¢ per mile
Chevron gas, cost per mile -> $10.75 / 167 = 6.4¢ per mile

Conclusion:

According to my 2000 GSX-R600 two-wheeled performance machine, the cheaper "poo-poo" gasoline seems to give lower fuel economy, but when you factor in the cost, it ends up being proportionate, and virtually the same as the Chevron Techron gasoline, which costs a bit more, but gives better gas mileage. The "cost per mile" is always the key factor to consider.

My next test is to do another full Techron fill-up to see if I get the same gas mileage again. Sometimes you ride more highway than city, vice versa.. sometimes you waste, or conserve gas, for various reasons.. but a 17 mile difference is unmistakable.

After that tank, I am going to do a 2-tank test and fill-up with the lowest octane, cheapest stuff and see what my gas mileage is. If it ends up being only 1-2mpg less than the expensive premium fuel, and my bike is okay running it, per the owner's SOP, then why not save some money, especially right now with gas being so outrageous?

Again, 17 miles is a considerable amount, so obviously there must be something in this Techron gas that makes it burn better in the engine. That may be enough right there to make a biker switch gasoline brands, to enhance engine productivity and possibly preserve engine components. All of my fill-ups have been with premium gas.

Doesn't running a lower octane-rated gasoline in a high-compression engine (12.5:1) cause problems to your engine like premature detonation and knocking ?

Yes. 12.5 is extremely high, though, and most bikes aren't there.

I have to use high octane gas. I got the 12.5:1 compression.

04-06 GSX-R600 runs 12.5:1 compression ratio so I wonder about jaydog....
