Default i think i made a bad decision

my bike scared the crap outta me today. i passed a truck that was doing 25 in a 40 on the part of the road where passing is allowed. so i downshift to second and hit the throttle. before i could blink (slight exaggeration) i was doing 70. i got freaked out, and thats the end of passing anyone ever again. not even my "souped up" wrx could move that fast...and i have a gs500 (which i was told is the lowest model sportbike).

wait a day or two and you'll be dying to pass more trucks doing faster speeds, around tighter corners.

Find the right place and the right time and you'll find satisfaction in motorcycling. Obviously that wasn't it, and now you know better. Ride on.

Watch out ... throttle twisting is addictive. The GS500 is a great beginner's bike ... but it still is a 500ccm engine, and *can* catapult you forwards faster than you may be ready to go. When you step up from a smaller bike, you need to break the habits you learned to compensate for the lack of power - like dropping the bike into a lower gear and throwing the trottle wide open to pass a truck. After a while, you'll get accustomed to the power that this bike has to offer, and you'll be able to dial the appropriate acceleration for each situation.

Just make sure you have PLENTY of room to complete the pass, then you won't need to hit the throttle that hard ...

WHENEVER YOU PASS on the left, always make sure nobody is going to turn out of a street on the right hand side of the road. If you can't see along the right side of the vehicle you want to pass.....DON'T PASS. Just a few words of wisdom.

heh-heh-heh . . . the fever begins . . .

I can see right through into your brain, ngophat, right through. You're the kid that just got off the roller coaster, scared silly.

You're heading over to the soda stand to cool off, while your dad laughs at you and your mom assures you that everyone rides the coasters because they're scary. "It's supposed to scare you," she says.

Somewhere around 2/3rds of the way through your cup of coke, your eyes light up. You realize that your time with the coaster is unlke anything else you ever get to experience. You realize that those moments are fleeting . . . you'll soon have to go back home, back to school, away from the coaster . . . you're ready to ride again.

This time . . . with your eyes wide open so you can enjoy the full experience. THe next ride, you seek out a seat that you think will enhance the effects. By the end of the day, that coaster's nothing to you. You can ride it in your sleep.

You crave a 'better' coaster for your next adventure. One that can scare you like the first ride did. You're hooked.

It's only a matter of time.

yep your hooked! now take the time to learn how to ride, and don't do stupid %%%%% like try things that are out side your skills and your in for a long sport bike ride'n carrer! you will find your self looking for a bigger bike and bigger thrills. my riding started on a honda mr 50 and now 25 years latter i ride a 1200 bandit. oh yeah pay attention to where you have your fun, nothing like a big old traffic ticket to cut your ridding carrer short(trust me i know this from first hand! got a reckless on a xl500 in front of my house! that put a big dent in the fun funds for a long time!)

Which is probably one of the most dangerous periods of riding. Just remember
these five words "Don't ride beyond your skills". There's nothing like the first
get-off to break that fever.

I love being able to pass people quickly. I hate how long it takes to pass someone when you're in the car.

My theory about passing...you want to get it over with as quickly as possible!

You've been making passes at Nexus? To each, their own.

i wouldnt say a bad decision, just not ready for it,,, ive been riding for years and you learn something new everyday,, at the begining of the summer i bought a 98 yzf600, i was going to work and was on the highway, i was doing 70, i went to pass someone in the left lane and i looked down and saw 120mph, i seriously had no idea i was going that fast, it didnt scare me but it made me think a little more and pay a little more attention and get a cruiser instead

FiveInch ... (I'm safe, because your guns can't hit northern Switzerland) ... my girlfriend is quite happy with me, and I am very much in love with her. Although Nexus is a good looking guy, I prefer the soft, gentle skin of a beautiful woman over some sweaty dude on a yellow SV. No contest ... I'm staying over here for a while. I'm not planning any trips to Florida or SoCal anytime this year ...

In other words, Nexus is all yours ...

As you gain in experience, you gain in confidence. 70 will seem like your standing still. Remember you had a problem judging your speed, so do cagers.
Making a left across in front or making a right pulling ahead of you.
The next stage after gaining confidence, is over confidence.
This is were a refresher course, advance riding course helps.
A forum like this helps as we share in each others screw-ups.
Ride safe.

(Back to the topic)

Ride like you are invisible ... because to most cagers, you are. Assume that they don't see you, and be prepared to stop anytime a cage looks like it could cross your path. Sometimes being paranoid is good ... when riding is such a case.

The day I picked up my bike, I rode it about two blocks and pulled into a parking lot and shut it off and took off my helmet and shook for about 10 minutes. I'm not sure if it was fear or excitement that made me shake. Maybe both.

Now I am addicted.
