Default Bike Locks?

I am riding downtown these days in the houston area and was looking for some advice.

Should I be locking the bike somehow?

If so, what you guys recommend?

This topic has 2 threads going over at cbrworld.net basically the consensus was if its a high crime area to get a xena disc lock:
http://lockitt.safeshopper.com/9/270.htm

and an abus square or hex cut chain:

go to wallmart. they cary a masterlock that looks just like the motorcycle disc locks but they are 1/2-1/3 the price of a disc lock. then just run it through your rotor.

And what if 4 guys pull up to it in a pickup truck and take off?

If four guys in a pickup stop to pick up your bike I doubt that there is anything you can do to stop them.

Prepared thieves will also surely have bolt cutters and or some type of saw to cut anything you might try to use to tie your bike to a pole or something.

I've heard of one case where a guy chained is bike to a telephone pole with one of those super duty unsawable chains. Well they just cut through his tire and rim and off they went. All the guy found when he got back was his chain and a six inch section of his tire and rim on the ground.

You only put a lock on for show and to stop the opportunist thief. You won't stop a professional.

good point... a thief will take a bike thats unlocked before they will take one that is locked. you can also buy alarms. but like you said if a pro wants it he will take it. the same goes with cars. ((( disc lock, cable or chain, alarm and always park where the bike can be seen))) all these will help..

Thanks for the replies.

From what I am reading, it seems not to worry about a lock? If they want to take it, they are gonna take it anyway.

No really, if they are "professional" they will be able to take it. However, a lock can discourage many not so skilled thieves. Any device that can deter thieves should also get you a better price with insurance. Isn't it better to invest $80 just to prevent most thefts and not have to deal with the hassle of an insurance claim?

On a similar note, I know that in my province, some bike can't even be insured if you don't have an alarm system installed!

not on every ride, if riding with a large group of people the chances of your bike being taken is very small, however when on a long trip that requires sleeping in a motel/hotel, my bike and husbands are locked together.

IT'S BEtTER TO HAVE ONE. IF A THIEF HAS A CHOICE OF A BIKE WITH A LOCK AND A BIKE WITHOUT HE IS GOING TO TAKE THE ONE WITHOUT... IF HE MOVES A BIKE AND THE ALARM GOES OFF HE WILL RUN MOST OF THE TIME.................. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY ..............

I think I will go with the XENA Disc lock, their appears to be a few models,

Any real difference in the different models

I have a 03 GSXR 1000, is there one model of the XENA lock that is better than another

I think the retail is 79.99 or 89.99

Thanks

Well here in the DC/Maryland area..bikes are going like hotcakes. I have a Kryptonite lock with one of those NYC chains. I lock my bike up everywhere I go. I don't care were it is, I would hate to have my bike stolen with the lock and chain under the seat cowl...man it that happend, I would kick myself in the a$$ all the way home....... Man, my bike is locked up right now, and it is sitting in my garage. I know it won't stop a professional thief, but I don't want to make it easy for them either. Also when you are on this sportbikes, you have to realize they attract a lot of attention.... They same bike that will have the ladies checking you out, will have the young punks checking you out.

also, if you see 2 grown men on one bike...watch out, becuase they are looking to take a bike...they might pull up beside you at the light, and tell you to get off...if they have a gun, what can you do..never get too comfortable...always be aware of your enviroment when you are by yourself. When I stop at a traffic light, I always look at the cars around me. If I something doesn't feel right, I just split the cars and move to the front of the lane....hey better to get a ticket then lose your bike, or your life for that matter........

Just me little $.02

What are some good alarm systems out there? I'm not asking for Viper quality, just a good alarm with tilt, impact, and current drain sensing.
