| In Training ![]() | does anyone know if you can get a tag nd registration and all that good stuff for a bike that has a frme with a salvage title. and if so, does anyone know what one would have to go through exactly to get that done? my buddy has a spare motor lying around from a previous wreck, but the frame was bent/crakced/scratched, ect. so we were thinkin about just gettin another frame for it, but of course, you can get a salvage frame for MUCH cheaper than a new one, so I was just wondering what kind of hassle we might have to go through to make it all "legal" and what not. |

| Well, it ultimately depends on your state's law, but in general you need to fix it up, get it inspected by the DMV, and take the inspection report to the licensing office when you go to get it titled. Some states also require a preliminary inspection prior to you fixing the bike. But, in any case, you should call your local DMV or Licensing Office and ask about how to go about this. I know in NC there is a separate office that deals with "special" titles in which a salvage title would fall under. |

| In Training ![]() | i think i just recently found out that the laws are slightly different depending on which state you live in. the way i hear, it goes something like this: you can transfer a SALVAGE title to a clean title, but it has to go through an inspection first. as for the slightly different laws, in AL you have to have all the papers for all the major components used in building the machine (i would assume that would be the fame, of course, and the engine, maybe the forks, swingarm, ect) and you have to be a licensed "rebuilder" then you take it to a specified inspection office where they verify all your information and make sure the bike is in working order. then you can get the title transferred over. i've also heard there is a difference between SALVAGE and SALVAGED. apparently you can't do crap with a salvaged title. (it's more of less like a bill of sale, i guess you could drag with it... that's about it... not really "street legal" by any means) in GA to get a title transferred over, you just tow the vehicle on a trailor to a specified inspection station where the verify that the VIN on the frame matches the title, then they check to make sure the bike is in working order (blinkers, brakes, ect) then you can have the title transferred over. |
