1992. Red SecaII. 5mph onto a dirt driveway at Lake Marion in SC. Just plopped my *** right to the dirt. I was more shocked than anything, one moment about to park the bike and break out the Smirnoff and Lime Gatorade (sounds like shyte, but it hydrates you as it dehydrates you), the next thing I know I'm laying on my side w/ about 400lbs of metal between my legs.

Mmm-kay, here's the thing. If you want to call yourself "experienced", you can't quantify your time spent riding in months or years. Damn few people have actually spent months (about 720 hours or 36,000 miles each) or years (about 8700 hours or 400,000 miles each) on a motorcycle.

Based on my experience with the average rider (not the average forum member), a month of riding could easily amount to about 300 miles, and a year could be merely 850. Calendar time doesn't mean much. Therefore, if you wish to boast about your handlebar time, please use either moving hours or miles.

Thanks!

I've been riding for 9 months now. And I also ride well within my limits. I have not yet dropped my bike or been down. But I dont let that extra bit of confidence let me slack off when I go ride. Every time I go out I'm ready to ride and I always learn something new. I also practice my skills every chance I get.

If I am riding with friends and they insist on speeding or cutting in and out of traffic. Then they get to ride alone.

Default crash it is

20' drop off an overpass. Took the corner to fast, in wrong gear, never grabbed brakes, and it was a 90 degree turn. Wasn't that bad, can talk about it now. Spent a week in the hospital some cracked ribs, dislocated collar bone, messed up right eye (can't use), and oh punctured lung, but had a shoei that helped minimize the head trauma.

think it has more to do with "recent rider experience" or lack thereof. What I mean is that we lose skills as soon has we stop riding, be it for a day, a week or a month. Haven't been on the bike because it's been raining for the last ten days ? When you get back on, your skills will have been affected negatively, they will not be at the same point they were when you parked it ten days ago. It's not the tires that are cold it's your abilities.
.

Fair point! before the crash i had only had the bike back one the road for 5 days since putting it away for 2 months over the winter. A case of finishing riding in fair weather although getting cold and then getting back on the bike in colder weather expecting to be able to get the same level of riding ability although the skills may be rusty. Also a case of NOT riding to the conditions of the weather.

As said previously in this link i was leaned over round a corner and the back end spun away from me just as i opened the throttle mid corner, didn't react quick enough to get the bike upright.

Never mind i learned from it, i hope, and take it a bit easier now starting out from home.

As for total riding experience by that time i had been riding for 6 years pretty much every day apart from deepest winter and had accumulated a fair amount of miles. The damage to fairings on my bike just meant i did a quick repair job then didn't worry too much about dropping the bike during the track day i went on that summer as the damage had already been done.

Yeah right 21,000 miles at an average 130+mph ?

You need to report to the mod cave for retraining immediately ! Or at least get a new calculator !

Let me see ... I bought the Vespa in 1992, so I've been riding for 13 years. I think I've travelled about 25'000 KM on two wheels (since my riding season is only about 8 months per year, and I used to use the bike just for commuting to work). Given the average speeds around here, I would estimate that I've been in the sattle about 450 hours.

I was wondering who would be the first to catch that!! No, it's probably more like . . . 200 hours.

I'm joking . . . I don't think a 600 Bandit will go much over 45.

back in the early 80's i had a 750 suzuki gsl...was on a major street in el paso, tx. .4 lanes(2west, 2east) approaching a intersection..large van in inside lane...I was in outside lane....was moving about 20, slowing down for light. and low and behold there was a side crossover streetright at the light.. (now here it comes )...a little old lady about 90 yrs old ran the stop....van saw her and stopped... i did not... got her in the door....she kept going ...bike hung up , me between car and bike, bike trying to push me under car, finally kicked bike loose, she again kept going, friend stopped her about 2 blocks away....she said she didnot know she had been hit...although helmet broke side window...thanks for witnesses, i had 9 of them...she was ticketed for failure to yield, neg. collision, hit and run, and running stop sign.
skinned me a little, no major damage to me , but the bike took 4 months in repair shop and never tracked true after the wreck...the big lesson here is to watch out for little old ladies that peep over the wheel to see...they cant...
