Congrats on the new ride...I don't know how much you could hurt it...I know that different bikes have different recommended brake in routines. When I got my SV I was supposed to keep it under 8000 rpms for the first 600 miles...I did. So, what I'd do is right it gently like you're supposed to, and keep it under 5000-6000 rpms the whole way...but I wouldn't make it a non-stop trip, maybe take a break every 50-75 miles or so. See what the other guys say, and draw your own conclusion, but as long as you don't ride like a nut case you should be fine. It's probably better than stop and go traffic to break it in. One thing the guys at the shop where I bought mine from told me is to go through all the gears when you're down shifting, so you can allow all the parts to mesh and mate correctly. Have fun man, and welcome.

When I bought my 05 Busa I was told for the first 200 or so miles ride it gentle off and on the throttle, after a few hundred miles ride it like you plan too. Not meaning really going out and hammering down on the thing but to ride it but not to keep the RPM's constant roll in and out of the throttle. If anything is going to break it would or will in those first thousand or so miles thats what the dealer told me. Obviously abusing it will cause probs but they also told me if you break it in all baby like that chances of something happening when you go to snap on it are higher. Thats what I was told and thats what I did, have just under 1,500 miles now with all the mods and have had no problems.

the first 20 miles of your bike are the most important. whatever you decide to do, make sure that you are constantly varying the load and rpm of the bike. DO NOT MAINTAIN A STEADY SPEED AND/OR RPM.

And remember, the tires are also new, so take any curves *real* easy ... there is no grip for the first few hundred miles. I would recommend to make several stops on your journey home, so that the tires can cool down and then get back up to temperature. And take it slow and easy ... you didn't say what you are riding now, but if it's anything less than a 'busa, watch that right hand - the K5 Gixxer 1000 has more power than anything you've ridden before.

The dealer you are buying it from should have all the info about the bike.

Your tire will be fine after about 20 miles.

VARY the RPMs!!!!!!!!!! Do not ride the whole 230 miles in 6th at 85 mph.

Each one of the posts I fully agree with.

Just wait til you get on that thing. That 05 Gixxer 1K is...is...oh you're going to have fun!

Yeah just take it easy with the tires..vary your speed etc.

Check out how snappy it can be in first even at 4K. The balance of it is super nice. My friend that got one said that by next weekend he should have 2K miles on it. So I want to ride it again...on the back roads where no cars are around usually.
