Default Picked up bike last night!

Hello everyone

I am new to the forum and picked up my new 2003 GSXR600 (blue/white) last night. Looking forward to learning from all you veterans. I picked it up for $6800...deal or no?

Bill

well, from the picture it looks like you have frame sliders on the bike... big +. I'd also get swingarm sliders. best mods for the money i'd say are flush mount turn signals and an undertail with an integrator. don't get just a trailer lighting switch, they suck and make your blinkers go faster when you brake... corny if ya ask me. i'll post a pic of my bike sometime maybe it will give you some ideas.

Do yourself a favor, leave the bike stock, and invest your money in some good leathers, helmets, tires, some instruction and track days.

Worry about mods later. You will get more respect for riding skills than looks.

Nice bike, what kind of mods are you looking for style or performance?

yeah I planned on leaving it pretty much they way it is till I get use to the bike itself. I have a decent helmet, jacket, and leather gloves. I did order a K&N for it. Do the K&N's work well with Suzuki or should I just send it back?? The only reason I ask is because I read come places that it does more bad then good. Also do you have any suggestions on a filter and oil for my first service? Thanks

Not quite sure at this moment. It looks sweet, but I am up for anything that will set it apart from other GSXR's. I mean its fast as hell right now, but i would not mind getting an exhaust down the road. I am just tentative on getting one because i want a deeper sound instead of a higher pitch that some bikes have.

I assume the bike is new and stock already. I wouldn't bother with a K&N until it is time to replace the stocker. Air filters do last a while. It might flow a bit better, but how much it will really affect a stock GSX-R 600 I don't know.

I'm not going there Ask ten people that question and you will get ten different answers. If the bike is new, synthetic would be a good call at your first service. It is a bit pricey, but from what I have seen at the track, it has saved many a motor from pure destruction that dino oil might have caused.

I have run dino oil for years on hi-po M/C motors w/no issues. I am using synthetic in my 1100 race bike now, however.

K&N oil filters are good, Suzuki filters are good, AMSOIL filters are good. There are a lot of disbelievers in Frams and their construction methods, but I have had no problems with them.

Make sure you use synthetic oil for motorcycles and not for automobiles. Syn oil for cars contain detergents that will eat up your clutch over time.

I agree to start with getting the right gear then mods. Dyno first then start modding. And always have a plan when you start modding.

If you plan on upgrading in a few years I would keep it simple with a slip-on, sliders, wind screen, and tank bra (paint protection from zippers and stuff) so that when you try to offload during a trade in or private sell you can return it back stock and get more money. Let the next guy put his imagination into it.

forgot about the gear issue, I agree that should be first and foremost to getting mods or even a bike! as for oil... I use a K&N and change it every 2nd oil change. since your bike is new i'd just get the cheap fram oil filter, fill your bike with some cheap diesel motor oil like delvac and change it twice within the first 1k miles. then the rest is up to you. I've used full synthetic since my bike hit 2k miles and I use either motul motorcycle oil (partly synthetic) or delvac or even castrol full synthetic. I don't want to start some big debate on what oil to use... but to me oil is oil. delvac is cheap and it works, motorcycle oil is meant for cycles but I don't believe all the hype about how it is 100 times better than anything else.

oh yeah, whatever you decide on, DO NOT USE AN ENERGY CONSERVING OIL. bad news. it will say it in that little circle thing on the back of the bottle. (these are mainly 5w30 oils anyways but can also be 10w30)

here is a nicer webpage too. http://www.yft.org/tex_vfr/tech/oil.htm

Mod suggestion:

carbon fiber exhaust. They look great on those gsxr's, and it's so bad ass whenever you've been riding around all day and can still rest your hand on the exhaust.
