| Ok so ran into a guy the other day who i KNOW has been looking to sell his SV650S. So i finally give him the nod that im interetsted. Turns out he just got rear ended by some SUV at a stop sign. Bike went down. Some fairing damage and his elbow put a dent in the tank. Bike is a 2003 SV650S. Full micron exhaust re-jetted, power commander, with 1700 miles on it. He wants 4 grand. I told him i was interested but wouldn't buy the bike with the dent in the tank or the fairing scratched, so he is gonna have the hole blown out, and replace the fairing. There is also a place down here that i can take it to and they have a frame jig so they can see if the frame is jacked from when it went down. What am i missing? Should i just walk away? I mean if the frame isnt bent the bike should be good to go. As long as a certified mechanic looks at it and gives it the thumbs up i shouldn't be worried, or should i? |

| Well, who cares about a dented tank and scratched fairing? Take it in and have it checked (mainly the swingarm, rear subframe would be suspect here). Deduct that damage off the asking price. You'll most likely drop it or crash it at some point anyway. It makes your life a lot less stressful if you aren't worrying about how the bike looks. - Nut

| Ok, ill start off by saying that first of all, the suzuki SV 650S is a great, reliable bike with enough power and its plenty of fun. That being said, lets talk about this fall. You say it went down at a stop sign. A scratched fairing is expected and is no big deal (besides the price to buy a new one). But about this dent in the gas tank, i can tell you right now that if he fell at a stop sign, the dent didn't come from his elbow. If you can go see the bike again, see if the dent lines up and is consistent with the end of the hande bar hitting it. If it doesn't, then the guy probably isn't telling you the whole truth. See if he remembers exactly where the dent came from, unless it lines up with the handlebar, in which case its probably that. Next ill go to the frames. If it went down at a stop sign, unless the SUV really hit em good, the frame (both main and sub) and the forks and everything important should be fine. But, if you got a guy that can check it out, theres no reason not to, it'll only do you good. And lastly, lets talk about the extras. Since its got full micron exhaust with it being re-jetted, you'r gettin more juice out of it from stock, and the power commander is a necessary add-on in order for the bike to be able to regulate the fuel pressure so you dont have any flat spots in the mid-range from the exhaust. So, as far as those extras go, everything there has been taken care of so its ready to roll as far as that goes. In conclusion, if you are very interested in this bike, id say spend more time investigating this bike for the things ive previously mentioned. Otherwise, you're better off taking that 4,000 dollars somewhere else where you could probably get a bike just as good without having been crashed. If you could talk him down a few hundred from the 4,000 dollar mark, id say if everything on the bike checks out then, well then you would have yourself a pretty good deal. Keep in mind, private party value on the 2003 suzuki SV650 is 2,900 and the retail is 4,000. The extras bumps it up a little and the mileage is good, but dropping a bike always puts a decent dent in the price. My final thought would be to look elsewhere unless you can pick it up for about 3,600 - 3,700 and the bike checks out for all the major things (Frame [sub and main], forks, and the swingarm). Let me know what comes of this deal, id really like to know what goes down. (WellityC@hotmail.com) Hope this helps you. |

| Thanks for the info guys. As for the dent in the tank. It isn't in a position that the handle bars could have done it. It is in the rear left quadrant of the tank. He showed me his left elbow where he got stitches, of course he could have gotten the wound from the ground too. /shrug. Ill keep yall up to date on it. BTW, are Orange SV's faster than the blue or yellow ones? |

| My biggest question: If this guy was rear-ended........why isn't the SUV paying for the fix? Isn't that why the SUV driver has to pay for insurance?

| If I were you, I'd take a pass on it. When my Valkyrie went down for the 2nd time (7 yrs between lay-downs), I _wanted_ them to write it off, so I could get a new bike. That's why I'm now riding a red Katana 600. Seriously, if the bike has been in an accident - by someone else, no less - and you buy it, and then you go down shortly afterward (God forbid!) you may never know if the cause was due to the bike being in a previous accident. For peace of mind and safety, I would recommend buying a different 'cycle. Quote:

Thats exactly what I was gonna say. I'd give him $3,000 and tell him leave it like it is. | |
