Default GS500F - looking to buy newbie needs info

Hi all. I am very new to bikes. Besides all the necessary tips / precaution info I am looking into this very interesting bike. 5k for 500cc brand new sounds very inviting to me. I would like you, if possible to compare this bike with some other brands for my better understanding to what I am getting into.

RELAIBILITY VISE: With Honda
Speed and power VISE: With GSX-R 600 / with Ninja 600cc and up.

And anything else that comes to your mind.

I am all ears. Thanks.

First off, welcome to the site and congrats on considering a reasonable bike for you to start out on !

The gs500f is a great bike to learn how to ride on. Its easy to ride, not too much power to be overly tempting for a newb, its comfortable and will serve you well for as long as you like.

I know several rookie riders who have started out on a gs500 and had nothing but good things to say about it.

Comapared to a gixxer 600 and the like, well, there isnt much comparision really. The GSXR has more power, torque, and top end speed. Not something you wanna start out learning to ride a bike on, IMO.

Another good choice is the Ninja 500. Another great bike, similar to the gs500. Personally though, I'd prefer the gs over the 500 ninja.

Most definately take an MSF course and get some proper gear too.

I own a gs500 and it is a great bike. I've been riding it for about a year and I have truly enjoyed it. It's a great starter bike and I think you'll have a lot of fun learning on it.

Buy Finch's GS 500 F.

It's a real gas saver. Looks cool too.

Default Thank you all for your advice

Some additional questions:

Am I better off spending 1500$ more and getting the Katana?
What about standard sv65 for a first bike????
And how does Bandit compare to Sportline bikes, is it just the driving position or is there more?

I started on a '99 GS500, and it was the perfect starter bike for me. I've since bought an '04 SV650S and love that bike! I'm glad I started on the GS500, I would've had a hard time starting on the SV; however, I know other people on this forum have started on the SV and were successful doing so.

I think the most important thing is to take the MSF course, no matter which bike you decide to purchase. I would recommend taking the class before you purchase the bike as well...that class is usually a very eye-opening experience in regards to how "much bike" you decide you want to get right away.

Good luck, keep us posted!!

YES BUY IT PLEASE!!!!! buying that gs i know has saved my butt many times.. it's the best looking 500 out there too. i know that you will enjoy it has a ok power band and has just enough power to get you going and not scare the hell out of you... i get alot of looks because no one knows what the hell it is it has gsx-r 1000 headlight and it throws everyone off... if i had to do it all over agian i would still start on the GS...

$3,900 or O.B.O. need to sell her ASAP (new 600 will be here soon)!!!!

Finch's right. It has modded GSX-R1000 fairings so it looks like a super-sport without the high insurance rates.

Wish you were in southeast Texas, I'd come check it out .... Not seeing many 500's for sale. Lots of 600's though... People gettin' scared and selling them and keeping the not-as-scary 500's?
