Default Need help w/ gear

Hello all,

I'm pretty sure personal preferences will play a big role in the responses, but I need some help.

I need a jacket; armor makes sense to me. Have been looking online.

I like some of the Joe Rocket stuff.
Is it a good idea to buy online without having tried the jacket on?
Are there any brands to stay away from?
There's always ebay ......

(Oh, yeah - my ride is a '97 Kat)

Thanks.

I too have been looking at the Joe Rocket jackets. For me, I would never buy clothing without being able to try it on. Of course, I'm 6'6" and a whopping 165 pounds, so off-the-rack stuff never fits too well anyway.

I'm 5' 11" and 168 lbs.
Off the rack will probably work well .. sigh!

my opinion is that you should try on a jacket, im a tall but skinny guy and i normally wear a uk medium top however for my jacket i needed an XL. it is also vital that ur jacket fits you properly otherwise there is no point in wearing one

that's what I thought. It cuts down on all the available choices, since most of the stuff isn't available at local dealers.

I looked at the gear sites listed here:
http://www.cycleforums.com/forums/sh...e+rocket+spidi

I obviosuly need to figure out how to post a link ......

Have to agree - you need to try the jacket on and make sure it fits properly. This isn't just a "fashion thing" - those protectors won't protect you unless they are where they belong when you need them! If your gear doesn't fit properly, the protector may be too high or to low to properly protect you from the impact.

If you are short on cash, then go to a shop, try on some different jackets and see what fits (noting the manufacturer and size), then go home and try to order exactly those items online. If you are lucky, it'll work. (Haven't tried this ... since there are lots of affordable shops around here).

I work in Basel, I live about 20km south-east in Canton Basellandschaft.

Yes, Basel is a nice town ... it would be even nicer if it would STOP RAINING! It's been pouring all day, but they are predicting that it'll dry up tomorrow before it starts raining again on Thursday. I guess tomorrow will be my last ride before cleaning up "Suzi" and putting her to sleep for the winter

I'm in PA; it's definitely staying grey now, days are shorter, and it's constantly getting cooler, but I'm still looking at riding on dry, non-snow days. We'll see .....

Where in PA? If on the eastern side, there are a number of stores that have a nice selection of gear in the Allentown/Quakertown area. I bought one jacket from a local store and tried on another one which I ended up buying over the Internet. Sizes are definately weird! I'm your size but I needed an XL Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket.

I'm basically in Allentown.
Have been to Blackman's; but need to try on the jackets.
Which other dealers/stores can I try?
Scotts?

I'm in Bethlehem

There is Scott Powersports on 309 that has a nice selection of gear (I bought my gloves there and tried on the Joe Rocket jacket.

The suzuki/BMW dealer in Phillipsburg (22, across bridge and then on right....if you miss it its hard to get back) ... I got my helmet there

Andretti power sports just past ther in Phillipsburg.... I got my heavier jacket there.

If you are into leather there is a store on 191 north of 22 in the "trolley station" behind enterprise car rental.

Blackmans also has another store down 309 but I haven't been there.

Hey since we are so close we should ride together some time!

Thanks for listing the stores. I picked up my helmet and warmer gloves at Blackman's. Scotts closes early on Tuesday, or I'd head down there today.

What kind of bike do you ride?

I've just picked up a 97 Kat 600. For all practical purposes, I'd say i'm a new rider. Still want to ride?

Well I ride a 95 Kat 750 that I picked up last spring, so I too am a fairly new rider! In answer to your question, yeah I sure do, but I can only ride on weekends (I get home too late from work to ride during the week).

On top of that, I think the clocks are a-changing this week ... so we lose more time.
