the luggage choices are much better for the wee compared to the 650r.

Have you looked at the SV650S? It's a faired version. I think it looks sweet.

you lose the comfy upright riding psoition, though - it has clip-ons instead of handlebars

Oh wow I didn't know that. You can still have upright clip-ons though, can't you?

Yep, it (SV650S) has a sportbike riding stance. I sat on a GSX650F, which is faired and has an upright standard riding position, but it just didn't suit me well(ergo wise).

Sv650 for the win. It was my first bike and I loved it! Put 25k miles on it without an issue. The drive train is bulletproof!

If only they had a faired model that kept the upright seating position. I don't want to go with a naked bike. My M50 is very comfy, but a 200 mile ride on the freeway a few weeks ago kicked my butt due to the wind blast. I can easily burn a full tank without any issues from the seat, but I got fatigued after long hwy runs.

sounds more and more like you need to look at the sport touring bikes like the Honda ST or Yamaha FJR.
If you're concerned about it being more tourer than sport... check out this picture of Team Oregon instructor Dan Bateman on his month old FJR.

Nice pic. But I think those bikes are littel bigger than what he's looking for. Here's a plus for the SV (even though I voted 650r). Like the M you can get a windshield (of sorts) for it. I got one for my M for longer/colder travelling, but haven't had the time to really test in for distance. But I do know that seriously reduces wind on the chest.

Not a newer rider - he's a Team Oregon instructor of 15+ years

Default Down to the nitty gritty

Got my M50 sold, so i will be purchasing this weekend. I still have to decide between the GSX650F and the Ninja 650R. I gave the GSXF another sit, and it's amazing how different it felt when I wasn't coming off a ride on my M50. I will know better when I call my local dealer today and get my OTD price on the GSX. Dealer pricing may be the deciding factor here.

Appearance: Ninja- The lime green color I like since I ride alot in the dark, as opposed to the all black GSX. I really don't like the blue/white GSXF at all. The exhaust on the Ninja is tucked away nicely, and really cleans up the back end. That Zuki can is pretty horrible looking, though I can live with it.

Maintenance- Ninja- Not really a cost issue here, as I do my own work, but it has to be easier to maintain a 2 cyl then a 4.

Commuting- Ninja- Will really feel the 80lb weight difference on my daily commute.

Power/Tourque- Equal- The Zuki puts out more, but has more to push down the road.

Comfort- Equal- I think we all know what stock seats are like. The Ninja is a bit more narrow, but the GSXF is lower.

Touring- GSXF- The extra weight will disappear on long highway runs, and it should tote luggage better and be more stable on the freeway.

Cockpit- GSXF- Suzuki went the extra mile here, with an instrument cluster that make you forget you are on a budget.

Fit/Finish- Suzuki- Fairing buzz seems to be an issue with the Ninja. Also, just on a test sit, my boots left marks on the Ninja where my anlkes touched the side.

Durability- Suzuki- The 650r plant has only been out 3 years, so the jury is still out. The GSXF motor is traced directly back to the 650 Bandit, proven to be bulletproof in Europe.

Resale- Ninja- I could only find 1 in a 100 mile radius, the GSXF still abounds. Perhaps it's due to the $500 difference in MSRP, but I have to think there will be plenty of new 2008's available in the next couple of years, making a used model harder to sell.

OTD price- ???? This could very well be the tiebreaker.

I would try to get a test ride on both. Maybe they have a used model you can ride.... I think a major factor would be whether you like an I4 or a twin. I personally prefer twins. Might want to look into gas milage too, if thats important to you....

Most of the reviews I've seen put the MPG on both in the mid 50's. Suzuki has mapped this motor and chosen a cam that makes for more linear power delivery. The GSXF still has it's peak HP a little higher up in the rev range, but nowhere near the sudden blast of say the FZ6's I4.

Kawasaki 750 Vulcan was a great bike. Wish my wife didn't make me sell it, so I could buy my 2005 VMax.

OK, you lost me on this one. Did you post on the wrong thread by mistake, or is this a flat out hijack?
