But the R1 is still a freaking rocket, very comparable to the GSX-R 1000. One wrong twist of the wrist on either bike and you're next memory is of a hospital room ceiling.

If it *must* be a race replica, the Triumph Daytona 675 just placed highest in a comparison in a Swiss motorcycle magazine, beating the R6, Gixxer 600 and Kawasaki Ninja 600. The Daytona had the best overall package - engine, frame, suspension, ...

the R1 is supposed to be great. My friend has one, and he absolutely loves it. He actually wants to buy a 600 again though, he claims that the 1000 is too much for the street. He loves the straight line performance, and he is a straight-line-speed junky, but he still thinks a 600 would be more enjoyable.

I get bored at work and I read LOTS of reviews on the middleweight sport bike class. I do remember the comparison you are speaking of, and I think they ruled the Daytona out because of the extra 75 cc, but I believe they still liked the Honda a little bit better. Every comparison I've read makes the 600RR out to be the best by far of the 600cc machines. I've also read a 'middleweight' comparison where they throw in the Duc 848 and instead of the Gixxer 600 they use the 750. Of course, the Daytona 675 was involved, and so was the CBR600RR. According to these writers, the 750 was hands down the best.

The only thing about comparisons is that every rider is different, so all opinions are biased in one way or another. It's hard to make a choice based on these comparisons. Best thing for you to do is go sit on a few bikes and test ride the ones you think you'll buy. As far as my opinion, I'd go with the Gixxer750. I love the new styling, especially the black, and even though they're something like 16 pounds heavier than the previous model, they're supposed to FEEL a lot lighter than the K6-K7 model.

My best friend has an R1. It is very fast. The only thing I hate about it is that it feels like the seat is rotated up. It feels like I am tipped forward. The reach and leg room seems close to my GSXR, but it seems to put a lot more weight on my wrists and my a$$ feels like it is sticking up in the air. Oh, the throttle response does not seem as as immediate or as clean as on my Gixxer. There is a bit of hesitation with the fuel injection. Everything I have read that is normal though.

I have to agree with Rickster. I am a new rider this very year and I have Driven so far A 2001 Yamaha R1 a 2002 GSXR 750 and I currently own a 1995 Suzuki RF900. Now I only bought the Rf because Im cheap and I got it for 1800 bucks but It packs a 937cc and quite frankly even though it can haul butt at high rpms I really prefer it and the yamaha R1 over the gsxr 750 because the low end torque makes it quite alot easier for puttering along. I am not in any way complaining about the 750 because it is an awesome machine. It really does come down to preference after all but it is nice not to have to wind it up to much for in town driving. The gsxr 750 I rode has since been totaled.

Also remember there isa number of bar manufacturers who offer replacement bars for the R bikes which lesson the aggressive stance and enabling you to ride the bike you may prefer. R bikes in general are not very comfortable but offer great handling and styling; if thats what you like, that other bikes don't offer. Simply put, their the corvettes of motorcycling. I have the Helibars on my overly powered 1000 and it provided a more comfortable platform for me and while I'm not riding the machine in an aggressive manner, it's nice to enjoy the overly powered litre bike even at slower speeds. Good luck!

My cow-orker, who rides a GSX-R 1000, openly admits that the GSX-R 750 is the better choice. It has more power than the 600, but doesn't carry the additional weight of the 1000.

But I would still never recommend any "R" bike to a newbie. I was reading another (German) motorcycle magazine - this was a special issue dedicated to getting started and new riders. They reviewed a bunch of bikes, and the one that they recommended was the Triumph Street Triple. The only "complaint" they had about it was that there is no ABS option. Otherwise, it's a great starter bike for someone who wants a race replica or "Streetfighter".

I would still recommend the Kawasaki EN-6 (I think they call it a Ninja in the USA). It has an inline twin, an ABS option, and is forgiving enough for a newbie to learn the basics without going into orbit or kissing pavement for the slightest error.

the people that told you not to buy a bike are your true friends, that means that they take care of you.

If you really want a bike, just buy it .... but be safe!

actually the 1000rr is the best for the street out of the big 4, at least the previous model, (don't know about the '08 ), it's more confortable and the power delivery is smoother, the R1 is just a pretty bike, my friend has one and he says it's just crazy at certain rpms. I almost got an '07 rr carry over cause of all the good things I heard about them plus their price was only $500 more than an '08 600rr, but got a good deal on the ZX9R, which has enough juice to keep up with anything on the road, plus is more confortable ride than any superbike cause of the clip ons being higher, kinda like on the SV1000S, and insurance is waaaaay cheaper

that's very true, we've had a couple of incidents (1 fatal) involving individuals from the base this riding season, at least one that I heard of (from my unit), was due to lack of experience and trying to keep up with more skilled riders, in the twisties, very similar to that story, the guy got a brand new gix 750 and wrecked it, he survived but he's seriously hurt, It'll probably be a long while before he can walk, something about them gixxer 750s, I had one too and messed it all up in a low side, being a squid all by myself , I was limping for little over a year due to my knee being messed up, went to physical therapy but the doc told me that there's nothing he could do and if it got worse to talk to my main doc, now 2 years later, I'm finally walking alright, no limping but it does hurt every once in awhile, and I finally convinced the wife to let me get another sportbike, I did had to promise not to act like an ass on a bike again or she'll , which I try to keep my word everyday
