| I'm almost 25, I've wanted a bike for awhile now and am finally thinking of picking one up, despite objections from my parents. I figured it's best to tell them before surprising them when I show up on a bike. I've never ridden before, and plan on taking the MSF course ASAP and then taking it easy in parking lots before embarking on my commute to work: 30miles on the highway, not much traffic. After much reading and conversation with a co-worker who has had several bikes over the last 15 years including a GS500, SV650, now a Busa and a Harley; I've decided the best route would be to go with a GS50 (preferably used) for a year or so and then move onto a SV650 later on instead of starting out with the 650. I have the chance to pick up a 2007 GS500 with ~300 miles on it for $3500, maybe a bit less. My question is what will the resale value be like in a year or so? I'm not worried about money, but was wanting to find something a tad cheaper, in the $2000 range to learn on. I've read how there is minimal loss on in demand bikes like the GS500, but since this one is newer will there be a more rapid depreciation in value? Should I jump at the chance to pick this one up? Thanks for the replies. |

| Bikes are cheap in your part of the world. I just paid $5000.- for a Honda CBF500, 2005 with 4000 klicks on it. And that was a good price here in Switzerland. I am in a similar position as you. Needed a temporary trainer for a year, and opted for something with a bit of a punch, but forgiving enough to keep me alive. Next summer I plan to upgrade to a FZ6, SV650, CBF600 or possibly a Buelli, Triumph or Ducati ); |
