Ok, time for a new question... in 1999 Ducati introduced the Sports Touring 4 (ST4), at an MSRP of $15K. Skip ahead a couple of years, and I see someone near me is selling a really mint condition one with 9K miles for $4500. At first I thought it was a lemon at such a low price, but then I saw that people are selling them for about ~$5000 all over the country (and England too). here here here here here and several other now-defunct listings that google turns up in its cache. 6K here One is even going for $3600 here In 2001 Ducati beefed up the 916 engine by giving it a little more torque higher in the rev-band. In 2003 they added the ST4S and ST4S-ABS, which switched to a 996 engine. In 2004 and 2005 they redesigned the look, and in 2006 they cancelled the ST4. I'm just curious, is it normal for a bike to fall down in price this quickly? not even 9 years old and it's less than 1/3 of it's original value? Is this because the later models offered more torque/power/styling? On a side note, one friend of mine has a 2007 Monster S2R and loves it. Another friend of mine warned me against Ducatis saying he's read several horror stories of owners. I've heard some reports that Ducs aren't reliable, but everyone on Ducati boards says it's probably due to 1) people who blame anything going wrong on the fact that it's a Ducati- all bikes have problems, 2) people who don't want to shell out the extra cost of preventative maintenance on a Duc and get burned when something breaks, 3) hear-say left over from the days when Ducati used to make a lot of their own parts in-house in the early 90's. Any opinions on the 1999 ST4? |
