Default 99 BMW F 650 - a good starter bike for sport touring?

So a friend of mine is selling her 99 BMW F650 "funduro" bike since she is moving to Boston for a post-doc at MIT. Boston is no place for a bike she says. It has about 20K miles, and is supposedly well maintained. I'm going to go over and look at it today.

The bike is actually categorized as dual-sport/enduro/off-road. It's not a real sport touring bike - more like an adventure bike. It seems like it can take some panniers and cases though if you wanted to do some touring on it. It's a single cylinder bike making 48hp, and Bikez.com lists it as 440lbs with a top speed of 99mph. Most people selling it say it's great around town, but doesn't have any real highway legs. That kinda puts a hold on any decent touring I had plans for.

Any thoughts on this bike as my first? It fits the 650cc and below rule for a beginner bike. But she's asking $4200 and that seems high since I see others on the net going for like $3300 to $3800. New in 99 it's MSRP was $7900. I'd be more interested if the price was lower, but she said something about the previous owner did a some upgrades with it... I'll have to see.
